Worth getting an 8800GTS?

Thread Starter
Hey all,

I'm considering to buy an 8800GTS 640 or 320.. but will it really be worth it?
I mean, the DX9 performance is great, but I find DX10 performance rather horrible..

Now, those games are only the first bunch of a lot yet to come, and most are only DX10 compatible with a patch or something, so are those games just badly optimized or can we find games like Crysis perform so poorly on them as well? I would like to run it at max or near to max settings with a playable fps, and not something like 15-20fps.

What are your thoughts on this?

The "DX10" games that you have seen benchmarked are not true DX10 games. They are all DX9 games with a few DX10 features thrown in. No game out is a true DX10 based game.

Remember, games like Lost Planet and that Western game are DX9 games with "extra" features so to speak. In other words, had they been created from the ground up in DX10, they would have been running a lot smoother. Considering the delays Crysis had, I personally think that the 8800s are going to be holding up very well, especially the 640mb GTS.

if you want to play dx9 games yes, dx10 no. These are the first dx10 cards, and they can barely handle dx10 as of now. They can don't get me wrong, but as someone mention wait fro the 89XX or 9xxx to come out if you want it for dx10. but if you just want a really good dx9 card that can handle dx10 then yeah go for it. if you run a high res get the 640, but the 320 is such a good deal.

Thanks for that link, duckie!

I need to wait at least 2 months before I have enough money (gotta buy a new psu first..) so hopefully the demo of crysis will be out, or some other real DX10 benchies so we can see.

EDIT: @ B-80: Well, if I set my monitor higher than 1024x786 I'll die of the 60Hz flickerness (exept 1184x876 or something, but that reso has dissapeared in Vista somehow ) so the 320Mb version seems very appealing.

wait until the 2nd gen of dx10 cards come out. atleast, thats what im doing
post #9 of 9
I'm usually one to wait aswell but I went ahead and got the 8800gts 640 as soon as it came out and I have not at all regretted it. Its a great card and I think it will have awesome performance in games that are built from scratch in directx10. All these other games do seem to be badly coded. Just look at how great DiRt looks and it runs like a champ on these cards. If it was a for sure thing that the next gen dx10 cards will be out very soon that would be a good reason to wait. It's getting to be ridiculous though especially with how long it took the new ati card to come out so theres just no telling anymore.
