how do i tell if my cpu is dead?

Thread Starter
i installed a new CPU cooler on my computer and when i turned it on it seemed slower, forze a few times, and now all i get when i turn it on is a blank screen. i've cleared CMOS (jumpers and left battery out overnight), reseated my cooler, tried various configurations of unplugging stuff not essential, etc etc, all i get is a blank screen (lights come on, HDD spin up a little bit, fans come on). have i killed my CPU or just my mobo?
is there any way to tell which is dead? or anyway to fix this???
please help, im going mad trying to figure this out

Hit them with a hammer, then you'll be certain.

...Do you have any other computer to put them in? Have you tried reseating all components?

Did you get AS5 somewhere on the motherboard that it doesn't belong?

Or, did you scratch the motherboard at all?

This is probably a motherboard problem. I had the same problem with a Biostar motherboard.

Ummmm its probably the mobo. CPUs do not die that easily. Although you should answer to jph1589. So do you used any thermal paste the wrong way? Or touched the mobo while your fingers had thermal paste on them? It will not matter though if the thermal paste is ceramic based.

i used AS5 and i cant see any anywhere, i'll have a better look but i took my cpu out of my motheroard to take off and reapply the AS5. i used the arctic silver cleaning kit to take off the old AS5 and put on the new stuff. i might have put i little bit too much on (and i mean a little bit) but i've reapplied it with less and its still not working. my temps dropped over 20c between this cooler and my last one (measured in TAT) so it shouldnt be overheating. it was unstable as soon as i restarted it after putting the new fan on
