JMicron 363, Intel ICH9R, SATA dilemna with P35

Thread Starter
So I bought the GA-P35C-DS3R. Now I'm not having any problems because I haven't started building yet. But it seems that there's two different controllers on the board for SATA connectivity.

(x) Intel ICH9R (6 ports)
(x) JMicron 363 (2 SATA ports, 1 PATA port for 2 devices)

Here's what I have:

Two 320GB SATAII Seagates
One Lite-ON IDE DVd burner
One Lite-ON SATA burner
One IDE 200GB some stupid old disk

Now I'm confused as to how to connect these for optimum performance.

This link here: http://www.tastycomputers.com/...nload/gbsata2_raid.htm
And this one : http://techreport.com/reviews/...yte-p965/index.x?pg=12

Have me utterly worried. The first one mentions not to use the JMicron controller at all, if you're going to use IDE devices (in bold red a quarter of a page down). The second link mentions that the SATA ports for JMB363 have ridiculously high burst read speeds.

I'm in two minds, my logical brain is saying leave IDE devices on the JMB363 controller, put everything SATA on the Intel one. But then I'm thinking, ditch all IDE devices and put the hard drives (the more often used stuff) on the JMB363 controller.

Any suggestions? And for what it's worth is ACHI/AHCI whatever it is worth the effort? In fact I'm not sure what kind of effort is involved in setting it up.

Thanks.

I would connect the SATA drives to the Intel SATA controller. Then, with the IDE Hard drive and and DVD drive, just connect them on the same IDE cable with the Hard drive as the Primary (the end connection on the IDE cable) and the DVD drive as the slave (the middle connection). Set the the jumpers on the IDE devices to CS (Cable Select). You should be fine after that. The native SATA controller will be more stable/reliable.

I dunno about your P35 board, but with mine the ICH9-R are the only internal SATA ports on the board. The JMicron only control my Esata ports.

What confusion? Just RTFM and you'll be fine.

Anyhow, you can enable the RAID in the ICH9-R and then your JMicron controller should be set to EIDE (something like that) in order to read your optical drive and hard drive.

Now, you can set RAID 0 or 1 with those two drives and still be able to connect your SATA burner in the ICH9-R. Just like I did.

You can have both and in full use at the same time (ICH9-R and JMicron) w/o a single problem, at least I didn't have any when I was using my JMicron in my P5B-Deluxe.

I have my JMicron disabled. I use 4 of my seagates in raid 1+0. I also have my Asus DVD-RW Sata plugged into the ICH9-R as well and all works as intended. Asus told me it wouldn't but it does.
