Paint and Polish:Products I Find Work Well

Burn asked me what I use to make my PCs colorific and shiney.

Here ya go

Although not entirely lint free these towels work better than paper towels. Get this at NAPA.

These are completey unlike napkins or papaer towels--they are trul lint free--and must be used for polishing soft stuff like acrylic. Get these at USPlastics.

This will remove heavy scratches in acrylic and most paints. USPlastics carries Novus.

This removes the haze left behind by stickers and takes out the minute scratches left by #3 or fixes light scratches in acrylic.

This is an ideal product for keeping our flat panel screen clean and free of dust. It de=statics plastics and leaves no residue. NEVER use ammonia on plastic to clean. Windex will destroy your LCD monitor or side panel window.

This works on everything I have tried--metal. plastic, chromed plastic, glass, paint. NAPA

This 3M product is superior to any other brand of low tack masking. I use it all the time for everything from protecting something from scratches to holding a part in plase for a momentary check of fit to masking off areas that have been recently painted. Low Tack meaning it will not lift off the fresh paint. Lowes

This chemical resistant 3M tape is primarily for masking off stripes and making transitions. Although there are better tapes for this they would have to be ordered--this is available at NAPA. It comes in a variety of widths and is somewhat flexible for making smooth curves. The paint does not creep under this tape--as it will on tan and blue tape. It is not pinstriping tape-which is far more flexible.

Just for dust and airborn particles--provides some protection. Ideally a real carbon filter respirator would be the best for fumes and what not. NAPA

The mildest solvent and degreaser--will remove some wax, glue, dirt, oil, but not all. Good for delicate surfaces like Krylon paint or most OEM chassis paint. Drugstore

The next step up and will usually remove most Wally World type spray paints from metal with a good scrubbing. Ideal for removing certain adhesives, oil, grease. wax, and generally prepping a surface for paint. I like this better than PrepSol or lacquer thinner for this particular work as it leaves no smudgey residue and has less VOC. Lowes

This or any other furniture polish with natural oils ( Olde English) removes adhesives that denatured cannot. ALthough a solvent and surfactant to the adhesive, breaking it's bond, it s not harsh enough to damage delicate paints. Leaves a residue that can be buffed to shine on some paints. SuperMarket

This 2M sanding pad is great for this kind of work. I use all the grades from 180 to 400 to prep before paint and between coats. 400 is ideal for rubbing down the orange peel and other irregularities between coats. Expensive but lasts 3 times as long as paper and does not cut though the paint at the edges of the pad like paper can. Lowes

Wicked strong primer that etches the surface and clings like a spider monkey on a bannana tree...aYou will not need to sand a chassis or side panel if you lay down a coat of this stuff. Duplicolor. Available at NAPA

What I call Bumper Black--although it comes in charcoal and silver as well. This stuff is the easiest paint to work with--it lays down and covers in a couple of coats--will run if you lay down too thick a first cost--like most spray you should put down two light coats and a full coat to avoid sags. Duplicolor @ NAPA.

I am trying out these Metalcast colors on a number of cases. The can in the foregorund is a metallic gorund coat that gives the translucent candy paints their glitter. Metallic is difficult to la down perfectly--especially with pockets and corners and multople angle surfaces. The metallic particles do not flow out like pigment and require a learned technique to apply uniformly.
The Candy finishes in the backgournd are a booger to apply as well--they will melt most plastics so you have to lay thin coats. The will cure in an oven at 175 for about 10 minute with the door open on the top rack for rapid recoating and sanding. They also do not devlop their true color until a full cure...they tend to become for translucent and sparkly the longer they dry.

Hope that hleps.

CyberDruid.

it slays me when people use the cheap cheap cheap paint. I understand it's not in everyone's budget to use higher end things for their mods, but this thread should be a sticky, as there's lots of good info, with so few words.

Thumbs up!
