I think most people are forgetting that the new HD 2400/2600 series is not only aimed at the mid-range gamer but also at the growing HTPC market, these cards also have a built-in sound processor for the HDMI output and the awesome HD hardware decoding processor, not to mention that some 3rd party board makers will include DVI-HDMI adapters. These cards appeal to the needs of a much bigger market than just the mid-range gamer market. AMD has always been an innovative company and these cards are not short of their insight. I would suggest giving the 2600XT time to mature and be released for retail sale before purchasing the 8600GT/GTS, should you need a new video card at this time.

By the way does anybody know of any hard launch dates for any of the 3rd party card makers as to when the 2600's will be released for sale? I've seen plenty of 2400 Pro's on the market but 2600 is non-existent. The closest I have found are pre-orders that "ship within 14-21 days". So I'm guessing I'll have to wait until at least the 14th of July to buy my new card? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
