Is it comparable like an 8800GTS 640Mb?

Thread Starter
I was just wondering what you guys though!

Today I built one computer with the 8800GTS 640MG Supercloked.
Havent had time to test it or bench it but.......

Then it came to me! why not get TWO XFX GeForce 8600 GT XXX 256MB in SLI for $100+ less and almost get then same performance when OC! (If not better?)

What do you guys think? I mean I could go for the 8800GTS but if its only gonna give me like a %10 better performance I rather get the XFX.

Do you guys see any notable differences that would make either one a better choice? Memory Bandwidth/BUS?

Recommend something else?

SLI always has problems in alot of games. Its alot better to get 1 stronger card than two weaker ones.

I'd go with the 8800GTS definatly, you can always SLI that in a while and it will definatly be better the the 8600's
post #4 of 16
The single card will totally crush to two 8600's in SLI overclocked. I don't know where you heard that the performance would be similar.

Ya, you could even get an 8800GTS 320 Mb Superclocked and achieve some nice results. I managed to squeeze out a 12,230 3DMark06 score. I doubt you'll get that with 2 8600s in SLi. They are designed for those who want to play DX10 games but are on a budget, even if the games are on low-medium settings. If it's performance you want from your system, I suggest you grab a $300 eVGA 8800GTS 320Mb Superclocked. Much better results than what you're getting if you SLi 2 "budget" video cards.

A buddy of mine, back a couple of years ago, decided that it was a bright idea to grab 2 nVidia 7300LE video cards to put them in SLi, and realised that spending 200 bucks total on 2 video cards gave him an average of 5 FPS more than just in single mode. He got caught up in what is known as Hype, where much attention is drawn to something, when in fact it's nothing spectacular. Having 2 video cards in SLi doesn't give you 2x the performance of one of those video cards, it merely gives you a 20% increase, at best, with games that are designed to handle SLi. Don't even think about using SLi with a low-budget video game, as you may in fact LOSE framerates.

In my opinion, it has never been worth the money to go with SLi when you could simply put that money into one very nice video card instead of 2 lesser cards.

What some people have done, and still do, is buy 2 of the latest, greatest video cards and SLi them to get a [barely justifiable] increase in framerates to use with synthetic benchmarks, to keep ahead of the game, then sell off the video cards when a newer, better one becomes available.

Just remember that it's all about the price/performance ratio

The 8600GT is slower than one of my cards. And both of my cards in crossfire do not beat an 8800GTS. Get what I'm saying?

They don't. He is saying that both of his X1950 Pros, in Crossfire, don't beat a single 8800GTS.

An 8800GTS 640MB will crush two 8600's in SLI.
