equipment:

evga nforce 680i
e6320
2gb geil ddr-800 (4-4-4-12)
retail oem intel hsf

before we start i know the hsf needs to be replaced before going crazy with this thing. so if you have any recommendations on the best hsf, or if i should just go water? i'm not into the peltier systems that much.

ok last night got the system together, ran it for a little while on stock settings, cranked it up to a 1400mhz fsb and 900mhz on the ram with stock voltages and 5-5-5-15 timings. anything after that would no boot. This is the first system i have overclocked since the days of the amd xp series, and now inside this bio the mainboard has about 4 million settings for voltages and speeds etc... so i don't really know what i'm doing atm (i'll be reading the manual tonight) but surely those aren't the max speeds i will be able to get out of them. does anyone have similar equipment and could tell me what settings i should start looking at to push it further? i was looking to get about 3ghz out of it and i'll be happy

Fill out your system specs in the user control panel.

What are you voltages at for your cpu? Did you lock the pci-e speed? What is your ram sitting at voltage wise?

ram is set at 2.1v, which is what's listed on the specs. the mainboard had it at 1.85, and it was crashing on anything over 1200fsb, when i turned it up to 2.1 it worked fine.

voltage is set at 1.45 for the cpu, and for the pci-e i didn't even touch it.

1.45v is high for stock heastsink and fan. the manufacturer specs from intel say up to 1.35v. I have my E6600 @ 3.375GHz with 1.28v (stock is 2.4GHz). I would lower the vcore to 1.3v until you OC. What are your temps at?

Here are a couple OCN members who have 6320's

Quote:
L706A Kluit 3.50@1.46V measured
L707A goody24 3.15@1.35
Kluit is also running an evga 680i motherboard

Once you get a stable overclock, could you send me your week, overclock, and your vcore (bios and measured) and I'll add you to the list of C2D overclocks by week

oh wow it's that low? it put it up on 1.45 on auto from the mainboard. that probably explains why idles at 47c, but it never got over 55c after 20 minutes of gameplay at the highest settings. i'll be sure to crank that down to 1.3 and start moving up if necessary.

well i did as you said.. turned down the cpu to 1.3v, and have oc'd it to 2.975GHz and it runs great now. have the memory running at 925MHz at 4-4-4-12 and it's running fine too. i may go ahead and bump the cpu up to 3.1~ because it's only running 41c at idle and 47c under load (it was idling at 47c on the higher volts before) *ambient is 36c

i'm also going to try to bump up the ram to 975 or 950 atleast. we'll see what happens. thanks for the advice though man

You've got a decent OC! Keep in mind that the EVGA board is known for burning out the memory. If you are going to overclock it, keep the ram voltage below 2.3v. On the EVGA forum, people are complaining about burning out the boards even at 2.3v, which is within motherboards specs!

memory is at 2.1v which is the spec on it. i don't plan on going up anymore on the voltage, i'm just gonna tweak and see how far it will go like it is.
