just my two cents. I bet my 6400 at 3.6 can get higher framerates with same card/drivers as a Q6600 at 3GHz...but i may be wrong
But you don't take into account things like folding. That can use all four cores and it would smoke your chip.

Framerates really just depend on one core, unless your game is somehow optimized to use more than one core...

Well im mainly a coder and use Linux a lot, which doesnt even need my second core LOL... but yeah in XP rendering stuff and using Premiere Pro it helps with rendering times, and i guess for that a quad would be better, but 2X real time rendering for NTSC DVD digital quality is not bad

so i guess it depends on what you're buying now...if you're satisfied with oblivion and CSS, then stick to dual cores...but if you want to be ready for the onslaught of multi-core gaming, get the quad
Quads will outperform the Dual Cores? Understatement...lol

With Crysis and Alan Wake they will obliterate anything dual core can muster

arent the quads two dual cores soldered on the same PCB? thats not the same as native quad-core right?

we're getting off discussion, we're not here to debate dual core vs quad core

are you worried that the q6600s will sell out too quickly?

trust me i know there really is no such thing as future-proofing...but for the price and power you get from a quad, its really the best way to go for a new rig
it was on back order on the page all the way since we put in the first reservations... it will continue to say backorder till they get their G0 shipment in August (around that time)

they will wait to put in their Quad order till the G3 stepping is mostly/completely out of their warehouse because Intel doesn't care to check stepping before they ship to retailers... they are however trying to get permission for one of their buyers to actually go to the warehouse to pick up... in which case they'd be able to pick a pallet (or two?) they can always re-order.... the question is WHEN?

Yea, it just says "Backorder" because otherwise, people would constantly e-mail/call and ask when the chip is shipping, since it was listed as In Stock when they pre-ordered

Now, onto the bigger picture:

My best educated guess is that yes, demand will outstrip supply for a while. The Q6600 hasn't been Intel's biggest seller, so it's not likely produced in the same quantities as, say, the E6600.

With the coming price drop, demand is going to skyrocket. Just look at all the forum posts. So, I suspect at least in the short term, there's going to be supply issues.

Of course, Intel may be ramping up production, or they won't sell as much as we think - who knows. If I were a betting man though, I'd bet on limited availability for a while.
