NEW to folding question

Thread Starter
I want to fold with my computer, but I reboot\\shutdown very often. Will this be a bad thing? I'm not looking for any awards or anything, just wanna help.

Also, does folding run your CPU at 100%?

With folding it saves its progress every now and again. Within the program you can set it to ''Checkpoint'' every 3 mins. I do this so I dont loose any valuable works.

Aslong as you get abit done now and again its all good.

You can set it in the program settings to either utilize more or less of your CPU.

Well, if you shut it down for the night often, it's likely that you won't finish too many WU's (you could miss deadlines). If you just restart the computer every now and then, but leave it on through the night, you should be fine.

Either way, you will get work done. You may not compete for points, but you said that's not a goal for you.

Oh, PS... fill in your system specs

If you run the console version, be sure to stop the program with Ctrl-C or you run the risk of losing the WU. Also, you won't be able to do SMP if you turn off because you'll probably miss the deadlines.

My specs are there.....
I usually leave my comp on over night. Can I set folding up to run 24/7 on 1 core and use the other core for my daily computing stuff?

I usually just sit on OCN and check my e-mail\\surf web all day. I dont even put stress on my system, so I wanna use the wasted resources for something good.

F@H only uses unused CPU cycles, when you are using your computer you won't notice it taking up resources because it lets you use what you need. Let both cores run and it will scale back when you are doing something.

lol, when i was writing the post i couldn't see it.

Anyway, F@H will only really use your idle cycles. It's not like you'll have a problem running games or surfing the net or anything like that. You will be able to run it on both cores, or run the SMP version.

check out faqs for how to run dual core folding or how to setup the SMP version.
