How to connect two comps?

How can I connect two computers without a router? Are there special lan cables I can plug in one and the other and they will be connected?

Thanks

You will need a crossover cable. It's an ethernet cable, but with a twisted pair line in it basically allowing direct data transfer between 2 computers. Should be able to get it at RadioShack.
