DDR or DDR2?

Thread Starter
I'm building a new computer really soon, and the motherboard that I have supports both DDR and DDR2 RAM. So my question is, which type of RAM will give me better performance? And which one will be easier to reach the max FSB (290-300mhz) this board can go?

I dug through Anandtech and found the article about the board and they compared DDR and DDR2. The difference in performance is not great at all, but overclocking is not mentioned.

In addition, the article only talks about DDR 400 RAM and DDR2 667 RAM. I'm looking to get either DDR400 (DDR 500 is too expensive) RAM or DDR2 800 RAM.

So is 2GB Crucial Ballistix DDR2-800 (Cas 4 Latency) better or the 2GB OCZ DDR400 (Cas 2 Latency) better?

Thanks!

that means they will both run at the same frequency, but ddr2 has a double data rate (transfers two times the data at once). essentially, you're gonna want the ddr2

DDR2 is faster, but its not that big of a difference other than in benchmarks. the amount is generally more important. (2GB these days)
its only possible to do 1:1 with DDR2 though. so id go for that.

DDR2 Of coarse is better then DDR. But DDR2 800 IS the best there is out there for now.

Definitely go with the DDR2. Overclocking or not.
I think it may even be cheaper than DDR....'bout the same actually.

That's not true at all. DDR = Double Data Rate. So both DDR and DDR2 do this. DDR2 is just able to hit higher clock speeds and uses less power.
Once again...

with those ballistix, you might even be able to do 1:2.

Yeah, it actually is cheaper.

I guess DDR2 definitely has matured enough already, so I'll go with that

Thanks everybody!
