in my city its Cox Communications or the high road.

some parts get Quest DSL and sprint broadband, but sprint is even more evil than cox, so I think ill stick with cox... I wish Quest had a better aDSL service, but its not too stellar unless you are sitting next door to the hub (latency is heavily dependent on distance from the quest locations)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Net_neutrality

Quote:
Network neutrality (equivalently "net neutrality", "internet neutrality" or "NN") refers to a principle that is applied to residential broadband networks, and potentially to all networks. Precise definitions vary, but a broadband network free of restrictions on the kinds of equipment attached and the modes of communication allowed would be considered neutral by most advocates, provided it met additional tests relating to the degradation of various communication streams by others.
Quote:
some commentators have suggested that network neutrality violations can be enforced under antitrust/anti-monopoly legislation, and that no specific laws or regulations are needed. Some countries, like the UK make it relatively easy to change ISPs and dozens of options are available, whereas in the U.S. and many other countries only one or two local network providers are available. It would be expected that any NN issues would be more common where monopoly or duopoly providers exist.
Quote:
Some claim that collecting premium fees from certain "preferred" customers would distort the market for Internet applications in favor of larger and better-funded content providers and against small providers. They argue for banning such financial arrangements, even if those payments might offset total network operating costs ultimately charged to consumers.
Quote:
Telecommunications companies, having invested billions of dollars in new network infrastructure, claim the right under U.S. law to operate the network with minimal government interference. They claim that anti-tiering regulations may indirectly prevent the expansion and improvement of Internet access for their customers, who have used an increasing amount of bandwidth. The telecommunications corporations also claim that a lack of differentiated funding sources has slowed their own corporations' implementations of new technologies and also resulted in elevated prices for many of their customers.
Quote:
Given a rapidly-changing technological and market environment, many in the public policy area question the government's ability to make and maintain meaningful regulation that doesn't cause more harm than good.
Quote:
Bob Kahn, one of the fathers of the Internet, has said net neutrality is a slogan that would freeze innovation in the core of the Internet
Quote:
Some cable operators, like Comcast have taken a somewhat mixed position -- they have repeatedly affirmed that they consider neutral networks desirable, but think regulation is a mistake. Journalist Andy Kessler has argued this point, stating that the threat of eminent domain against the telcos, instead of new legislation, is the best approach

Network neutrality is the principle that Internet users should be in control of what content they view and what applications they use on the Internet. The Internet has operated according to this neutrality principle since its earliest days.

“Once again, independent experts have looked at the net neutrality issue and asked, ‘Where’s the beef?’ There’s an explosion in broadband deployment in America now, which is creating jobs and making high-speed connections more affordable. With consumer protection laws already in place, this is no time for government to raise prices with heavy net neutrality regulation.â€

While "neutrality" sounds benign, the proposed legislation would give the
FCC powers that it currently does not have. Be clear, *there is no
neutrality legislation in place and we are doing just fine. *
Quote:
It is also being sold as "fear the big bad corporations". I don't have any
particular affection for any of the companies involved here, but I do know
that customers know best. Some customers might indeed say, I will pay
more for better video. Alternatively, the market may say "we like it the way
it is", which is neutrality de facto. In either case, we don't need Congress
or the FCC to make the call.

Note2: Who do you think is banning video games and censoring content left and right?

This and the FTC thread should be merged since they deal with the same issue.

Uhh that dontregulate.org site is wrong, its saying that google, yahoo, and ms are agaisnt net neutrality. I don't know microsofts stance on net neutrality, but yahoo and google support it.
