My new sata will not work

Thread Starter
I have a new sata western digital 250 gig hard drive 3.0. I know i need to put drivers on the hd in order for windows or the motherboard to recognize it but i dont know how to go about that. I just made a boot able disk and windows vista did not see it. I do not have vista installed yet because my computer does not see my hard drive. How do i get my motherboard and vista to see my hard drive?

Vista already has SATA driver. You motherboard should automatically detect it since mobos don't use drivers to detect attached components. Check that SATA ports are enabled in BIOS. Or... just clear the CMOS.
Once again...

Double check the SATA connections; the cable that ships with the P5B is notorious for pulling off the drive with the slightest touch.

But to echo duckieho ... all you should have to do is plug your SATA cable into the hard drive and then the motherboard.

Then boot from your XP install CD ROM. During the XP installation, you will be given the opportunity to create a partition and format it ...

good luck and post your progress ...

Same process:

Doubled check that your SATA cables are snuggly attached.
Double check that the drive's power cable is attached.

Then boot from your XP install disc (be it 64bit or not), and the installation process, at some point, should see the drive and allow you to configure it.

Same thing for Vista. Install the SATA drive. Start up the computer, enter BIOS and adjust your boot priority to whatever drive the Vista CD/DVD is in to boot first. Save changes, boot to Vista CD/DVD when prompted. No SATA/RAID driver disk needed.

same thing as the above dude said too... we posted at the same time.

There might be a jumper on the back of the drive that needs to be removed,..... but this is not likely. Just a possibility. As Duckie pointed out, check in the BIOS to make sure the SATA ports are enabled.

I just unplugged and plugged all the cables from the sata drive out and back in. All the cables are fine. My motherboard for some reason is not seeing the had drive.

I looked in the bios, and i dont see anything that says enable sata ports, but everything on the ports says enable, and ready. If there is one single area i need to go and turn sata ports on or off, please tell me where that would be?
