Adding a fan...

Thread Starter
Looking to add another fan to my case to help with the airflow through the top (for ram/gpu/nb) cooling. I've got a Lian-Li PC-60USB B2 case (http://images10.newegg.com/NeweggIma...12-022-24.jpg). The top 5.25" bays are all open except the very top one where my DVD burner sits.

I can remove the other 3 protective coverings to get quite a nice square opening, and I was wondering what kind of fan I could/should mount there. Will a 120mm fan fit? Or will I need to modify one somehow to fit over the opening? Or should I get one of the 140mm AeroCool case fans (if it even fits)?

Thoughts and suggestions welcome.

Lots of people put a 120mm fan in the 5.25" bays. At most you'll have to make something to fit around the fan, into the opening. but it'll take up much of the room.

Good luck.

Yes, and you could get something like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835185021 to make things a bit easier

Hope it helps

My only concern is that I'll have two direct line 120mm fans with that Kama Bay piece. My exhaust is only an 80mm, and I don't think it'll be able to keep up. Is there a way I could possibly mod the back of my case without too much trouble to get a 120mm back there? I'll do my own research as well on this.

Hmmm... short of cutting on the case I don't think that any other mod will provide the exhaust cfm that you are looking for. There are adapters, but the physical bottleneck of the adapter itself would most likely negate the increased diameter of the fan... I have not tested that theory, it is merely specular in nature.

It looks like you have a blowhole...does that have a fan in it? If so that might help to balance out the pressure in the case.

Overall I would say that a negative pressure (exhuast > intake) would be desireable.

The Kama Bay fan is okay... the cfm is relatively low, but in your situation that may not be a bad thing.

You could always mod your own:

That is a run-of-the-mill Antec case with a 120mm fan bonded to panel covers that were cut down to size.

If I have to cut the case, I'll cut the case, it's just tight back there with the PSU mounted in the upper portion. I do have a single 80mm exhaust fan up top, and I'm sure I could make the opening larger and stick a 120mm up there for exhaust (more cfm than the kama bay perhaps).

If you think that a 120mm fan will be too tight of a fit, then you could try a Silverstone FN82.

The design of the fan lends to a larger fan diameter, thereby giving a greater cfm than the majority of 80mm fans on the market. The downside is that you would still have to increased the fan hole by another 1/2" (or thereabouts... maybe it is a 1/4"... I can't recall ).

There is also the Silverstone FM82-B, it is a 92mm fan with 70+ cfm. Please read the reviews as there are some things that might effect you. note: The fan (any fan) can be re-wired.

Using a combination of those fans, and all fans on a controller you could probably get a good balance of pressure and sufficient arflow to cool your system to your liking.

Bear in mind that both of these fans sound similar to a Harrier lifting off.
