Help with diagnosis?

Thread Starter
here is the deal, my friend somehow managed to force a cable into a usb port upside down. How, I don't know, but i'm sure a reasonable amount of force was used. I have already given him the "man, are you dumb?" speech, so we can dispense with that line. Anyway, his comp now just starts and turns off after some beeps. The fans, including the psu, only fire up for about 7 seconds. I have pulled the ram and it's the same thing. The motherboard itself is a P4G533-LA mobo which is primarily designed for Compaq and Hp Pc's. The CPU is an Intel celeron 2.6 with a 400 mh fsb. It's a socket 478. I didn't build it but the person who did is no longer living in the area. Please help, is it the mobo? and could anyone give me a link or guidance in picking a new one? Thanks for taking the time to read this. Hope I gave enough info.

He could of pushed a capacitor out of whack or bent some other equally important thing. Take the motherboard out of the case and dry to search the area around the usb ports for anything bent.
Then report to this thread ASAP.

Well if excessive force was placed on the usb port, I would most deffinitely think the motherboard is bad. Probably cracked it or something.

I opened up his computer and nothing looks broke, I also remove the cable running from the port to the motherboard. Still just beeps and shuts off.

edit: When I said usp port, I meant from the front of the case, not the usb connection on the mobo.

When in doubt , Reset all the ram and expansions cards, Also check the cables from the power buttons and from front peripheral connections and resit them if think you can remember the pin locations.

Just out of curiosity, did you try to start up the computer with the usb cord running from the case to the motherboard disconnected?

Yessir, same results. I am looking around for a compatible mobo, but I am really not having too much luck except for this spec sheet.
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/g...cname=bph07845
but most seem to be out of stock or outrageously priced.
