should i upgrade or build new?

Thread Starter
im running my posted build, its about 3yrs old now and in my eyes not to upgradeable being its a socket 754, i hate to buy more ram or a bigger video card for it because i feel it would just be a waste, if i were to upgrade it be looking at 200-400 bucks, but i priced a super cheap am2 setup on newegg for about that, which way should i go? can $400 build a better pc than what i have now?

my reasoning for wanting to upgrade is i just got windows vista premium and im looking to play shadowrun and do some minor video editing with my canon hv-20

here are my scores when i run the Vista test thing

Processor AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3200+ 4.2
Memory (RAM) 1.00 GB 4.1
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT 5.9
Gaming graphics 511 MB Total available graphics memory 5.2
Primary hard disk 83GB Free (138GB Total) 5.9
Windows Vista (TM) Home Premium

the memory was hitting 2.5 and the cpu was 4.1 before i OC'd a little bit, I would like to see all of my scores above 5, please tell me how

EDIT: if I was to build a new system, i would be looking to sell this one, about how much should i ask for it?

The only way to answer that is to ask how the games you are playing are performing? Honestly if you can wait a little longer for the AMD chips to come out, the competition should drive the prices down on CPUs. Video card prices are suposed to drop soon too. I say wait and use/abuse your system as long as you can!

Definatly go for upgrading. I would go to an AM2 setup say you have $400 then I'd go with this.

Opteron 1210
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819105015
DFI INFINITY NF570-M2/G
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813136019
GeIL (2 x 1GB) DDR2 800
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820144062
SAPPHIRE Radeon X1950PRO 256MB 256-bit

ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 64 Pro

That's under $400 for a new set of guts for your computer

Nice build quote

But I'd wait just a little bit longer for K10...

If you feel the need to upgrade now though....I would have to say *gasp* go C2D

better value for your dollar (prolly better rate of depreciation too)

K10 is AMD's new upcoming architecture following K8. It'll come in quad-core and dual-core models (not sure about single-core). You'll probably get a better explanation here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMD_K10

Intel's Core 2 Duo/Quad is the fastest most of us can get our hands on right now. They also overclock very well; in most cases, these chips get to at least 3ghz. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Core_2_Duo (Eh, I'm getting lazy).

I'm a n00b too

Core2Duo is intels current architecture which has given them a significant performance edge over AMDs k8 A64 series (am2 as well) of chips. They can push high FSBs, support DDR2, have lower power consumption, are 65nm process and execute all current instruction sets more efficiently and rapidly (I believe).

k10 (aka Barcelona cores or Phenom, Kuma, Athena) is AMDs belated belated response to C2D. Improved memory controllers (with support for DDR2 and maybe DDR3???), improved instruction set execution, 65nm process as well...Remains to be see where it stands in real world performance though...

thanks for the description, would that ati be cheaper then the nvidia equivalent? how do they compare, i have always heard that ati was better for gaming in general, never knew how much truth there was behind it
