XFX 7950GT - Possible bottleneck?

Thread Starter
Hey, I'm currently running a eVGA 6600GT card.

A friend said he's going to buy me a new graphics card so I can play some online games with him. =P

I'm currently running a Pentium 4, 2.8Ghz Prescott processor. I'm wondering if I upgraded to a XFX 7950GT, would there be a large bottleneck? Or would those two items run relatively smooth together?

If the bottleneck seems huge, I could also go for an eVGA 7800 GS.

Any help, greatly appreciated.

if the cpu your running doesn't have HT then yea I'd say your cpu might be a bit out dated. mostly if your using a cpu intenste game you will really notice. but if your friend has a card like it that you could use and bench and see how it does compared to his..depending on his system specs....but thats just to get a relative look at what performance you might get. so I'd say the 7800GS if it cant take the 7950GT, Oh and isnt that the dual core video card...??? cant remember exactly

go with the 7800GS ur cpu wont stand up with the 7950GT very well. It'll fall off the wagon

or hell get a 7600GT and save a little. 7600GT is an awesome card and it will go a bit better with ur cpu.

Sorry if my spelling or grammar is bad, I'm on a bus.
There's going to be a bottleneck there, I know for a fact my 3.4 P4 bottlenecks one of my 7800s. I'd recommend reading up on how to overclock unless you're on an OEM system. But go for the 7950 anyway, it'll do you better if you upgrade your CPU, which is the next thing I'd do if I were you.
See if your mates budget will stretch to a new mobo, ram and CPU, but your current rig with a 7950 will be fine.

I'd go with ESS with the 7600GT since i hear those OC pretty good.. and its cheaper and you wont have to upgrade your PSU also...since i dont think a 500w psu will do the 7950 version

Yes, the 7600GT's are good. They are getting a little dated though.

I am not sure about the overclocking, my 7600GT won't budge one mhz above
stock, I have even tried ntune a while ago when it had the "auto detect" feature, and it actually down clocked my 7600GT!!

before looking into a 7800GS, get a 7900GS, it is much better.
