i bought the 20gb model and popped in a 120gb Seagate into it. 10gb for YDL, 110 for XMB. Very happy with my decision as I have a hub at my entertainment unit for my other peripherals and I can plug in a USB card reader if I need to.

But!!!!! The biggest reason was the silly chrome *shudder*.

Can you put vids from your PC onto it and play them?

Under YDL you will be able to play many video formats.
didn't the new updates let you play videos in more formats now?

try ps3video9, it encodes any video to the format ps3 can read and play

mem card, usb thumb drive, ps3 media center x ( i think) sets up your computer as a server, so the ps3 can access it and download files from it. works well with ps3video9. you can also burn some files to cd and it will read them, not sure if it is just music though.
