how big can the clusters be? that sounds like it could help if the clusters it can cache were huge... at least 30MB... and why would it up my burst when I engaged it?

Disable it. It only helps very random requests that a desktop user will never simulate. Your benchmark may increase using it since it may do random access requests to the HD. However, you will never do this. The only time it would help a desktop user is if you had a heavily fragmented HD and you data was very scattered. The solution to this is defragging and not NCQ.

None of this has to do with safer. It is only about performance.

Write cache stores write data temporarily if there is bottleneck. This way the head can go retrive the next bit of data instead of waiting for any hold up. The read cache is the same thing for too many reads.

so this is basically where you enable cacheing... interesting... no limits or is it limited by the HDD's 16MN in my case?

I got better benches with them off... but I guess in real-world use it is the opposite
