College Students - Check out the new MacBook Pro's

Thread Starter
I have been shopping around for a decent notebook since April. After comparing all of the companies prices, deals, and discounts I finally (albeit reluctantly) decided to go with the 2.2ghz Intel based MacBook Pro.

I have been using windows since my first computer, and I didn't (and still don't) like OS X. I looked at Dell and HP, and then Santa Rosa came out and I looked at Asus and Acer. I wanted a 15in notebook that I could game on while away from my PC. The more I looked the more I was tempted by Apple. The idea of a 2.2ghz Santa Rosa based notebook, with an 8600m 4-5 hours of battery life and a sweet student discount was so unbearably tempting that when I heard about Boot Camp (and the ability to install windows) I couldn't help myself.

Well, the MacBook is here and I am NOT disappointed. I absolutely love this piece of hardware. As soon as I opened it I installed BootCamp followed by windows Vista.

The install was smooth, and surprisingly easy. Just follow the onscreen instructions, make a driver disc, install the OS and finally install the drivers. Once Vista was installed and everything was running properly I decided to give it a little test run. This thing is SMOKING fast!!! I swear it run's Vista faster than my PC. Earlier I was playing Prey on high settings smooth as can be. The T7500, 2GB of DDR2, 7200RPM HDD, and 8600m make the $2001 I spent well worth it. It plays games, its light, it has great battery life and its pretty. I really only have two complaints.

1) Student's get a "free" iPod nano - but in reality it costs $200 and you get a $200 mail in rebate.

2) It is very warm. I am wondering how this will affect the lifespan of the notebook.

I am certainly not an Apple Fanboy - the student discount and sweet hardware tempted me into buying a Mac. I am not disappointed. If you have any questions, please ask me. I know I had a lot of questions going into this purchase and the people on OCN were very helpful. I will do my best to help.

The MBP is certainly a great piece of hardware, graphics included. I just got a MB and i'm very impressed with it. I, however, am in favor of OS X. I used bootcamp, got windows installed VERY easily with all the drivers right away, and then deleted the partition 10 minutes later lol. I simply decided i don't need windows; I just love OS X so much.

Apple laptops are great for college, and as OP stated, you get the student discount plus the free ipod (really just a $200 MIR). Go for it.

What do you mean how did I find the Keyboard?

Drivers for the keyboard were on the disc I burned with bootcamp.

Edit: Also, part of the reason I dislike the Mac OS so much is because the school system where I live uses primarily Apple computers and so I have always been exposed to it. I find Windows to be much more functional. But as is the case above, many who use it really do enjoy it.

... It's awesome that you guys love your macs, but I simply do not get it. Especially the 'for college' talk. They drive me up the wall. When I read these kinda threads I just kinda, shake my head in disbelief. No insult intended in all this I'm just kinda miffed and tired enough to post about it.

I agree, the Macbook Pro's are very nice, however, I an never going to spend $2100 for a laptop, especially on a college budget. Maybe a MacBook, they are some what nice too.

Ah, sorry about that. I actually really like the keyboard, its smooth and easy to type on. The keys are back-lit, and adjust their brightness according to ambient light. I was a little worried about the keyboard before I bought it, I have heard some bad things about the layout but it really doesn't bother me. I could easily type a paper on this machine.

To answer the "but WHYYYYY ADONIS? WHYYY???" question, its because the hardware is solid, stable, reliable and fast. It is a package I really couldn't get from anyone else for the money I was willing to spend. In the end, my dislike of Apple wasn't enough to stop me from buying a Mac.

One thing to keep in mind though is that I wouldn't have even considered it if I couldn't install Windows, and I am not saying that other notebook manufacturers are bad. Other companies provide great machines, I just decided on an Apple and want to help people considering a Mac make the best decision possible.
