Overclocking my E6700 to 3.66GHz

Thread Starter
Hi, I need some help with my overclock. Before last night I was running:
Stock CPU cooler
CPU @ 3.33GHz (Up from 2.66) (333x10)
Memory @ 1000MHz (Up from 800)

Last night however I installed the Thermaltake V1 with AS5. Temps dropped 7-10 deg so I thought I'd overclock some more.

I kept having stability issues (windows wouldnt boot, windows would hang, etc) so I kept upping the voltage. I read somewhere that on C2D's, up to 1.5 is okay? I don't want to kill this processor in 2-3 years...However, if I set vCore to 1.5v, CPU-Z and the Asus prog say the voltage is only 1.43something. Is it actually 1.5v and those programs are reporting incorrectly? Or is this vDroop? If it is vDroop, does that mean I should increase the voltage past 1.5 in the BIOS to get an actual 1.5? Is that safe?

My current OC is not stable, what can I do to stabalize it? I lowered the ram overclock so it seems it's an issue of the CPU. (I was able to boot into windows and run some games with ram at 1098MHz though Stressing with Orthos, core temps go to 65C.

Current OC:
CPU @ 3.66GHz (366x10)
vCore: 1.43v (set 1.5v in BIOS)
NB vCore: 1.4v

1 those temps are a little high, try to stay below 50-50c
2 the voltage you see will be the voltage you get so you are running 1.43v

Yeah Vdroop is killing you, takes my E6700 1.5 actual to get 3.6 stable.
There is a Vdroop pencil mod for the P5B, not sure if it applies to your version though.
g00gle Asus P5B Vdroop pencil mod, it's easy peasy, my Vdroop is eliminated.

Oh yeah bitemarks made a good point. At 1.5 actual Vcore your temps will likely be out of control, especially if you are hitting 65°c at 1.43.
I don't start reaching the 60's until 1.6 Vcore.
How much AS5 did you apply and what method?

This is actually what I've been worried about, I think I might need to reseat my heatsink. I used the single line down the middle method...unfortunatly I had read some guide on this forum that someone used the end of a mechanical pencil to get a thin line...I tried this and it did not work well (wasted a lot of AS5 on my hands too ). The line was the correct size/surface area...but I don't know if it had enough volume. it was closer to a thick stripe of paint than a line of toothpaste...if you understand what i mean by that... (flatter, not a curved squeezed out of a tube shape) wasn't actually flat though.

Please people reccomend to me if I need to reseat!

Also a question about this pencil mod: I had read about it before...but was wondering -> does it really matter? Can't I just raise the vCore higher to attain the actual voltage I want? I guess it draws more power from the PSU but does that really matter?

Yes I would reseat, I use the line method. About the amount you see in grayskys pic Link, just a tad bit more then you see in Audis pic.
Remember in grayskys pic he is running a Quad, so you want your line the other direction.
As for Vcore, myself I would rather make adjustments knowing the actual rather than the Vdroop.
One thing with the pencil mod, it actually let me reach my max Vcore on this board, allowing me 3.9 stable.

EDIT> Here is a link for the pencil mod. Use a can of air to blow away the excess lead powder.
The mod works great, go for it. Get your temps under control first.

How would you suggest I make that line of AS5? Will the AS5 Applicatior/tube squeeze out a line of that thickness/size?

I am getting some wacky temperatures and I'm so confused

Ambient temp is probably around 23C but the Cores at idle say theyre like 21/22... That can't be possible... I have good airflow and lots of fans, but its not water cooling... Before, when using the stock cooler, idle core temps were 27/28C...thats still low isn't it? Is somethign wrong with my sensor? How the hell am i supposed to know what the actual temp is? (have tried with multiple progs: Core Temp, SpeedFan, Asus Suite, etc.)

Have you tried TAT yet for temps?

These pic show the exact amount and the pencil tip I used, .7mm. Thanks Audi

Nice, thanks for all the pics. I've read that some people rub some AS5 on the HSF base and then wipe it off to get it in all the 'crevices' is this a good idea?

The only time I ever spread AS5 is if both surfaces are lapped.
I've got great temps right now, no spreading of the TIM other then HSF mounting pressure.
