4200+ Windsor AM2 65w Overclock - How do I look and a Q.

Hey folks, read up here and dove in to my first X2 overclocking session.

The hardware:

MSI K9N Diamond 590 SLI
AMD X2 4200+ AM2 2.2GHz
2GB A-DATA Extreme Edition 800MHz EPP Memory
Sythe Samurai Z Rev B
Ultra 600w X-Finity PSU
Ultra X-Blaster Case with 2x 120mm Ultra case fans

The results:

2.7GHz rock stable for 8 hours with orthos. Screens below.

Idle temps: ~34-35C, Full Load Orthos: 55C.

Memory at 4-4-4-11 2T, 820MHz.

FSB 246, HTT 4x, using a divider to start the memory at 667, then bumped up the FSB.

Voltages: memory bumped to 2.05, CPU 1.44, NB bumped up one notch(can't remember exact setting, one above default.)

How does this compare to others o/c with this CPU? I think I'm at the limit for my temps, in that, the CPU may go higher but I wouldn't feel comfortable with foll load temps above 55.

Also, notice the discrepency on the memory page of CPU-Z? It lists 386.6MHz as the frequency but everywhere else including the BIOS it lists it at it's correct speed of 819.something. Anyone know why that is?

nice job bro,you should be able to do 3.0GHz with water cooling,I got my windsor to post at 3.0GHz @1.65 volts on air.

The jump from idle to full load temp is a bit much, usually a mid 30ish idle won't get that high under full load!
Did you check the HS mating surface? Was it rough or perhaps not true flat? If you say yes to either then do lap it.
2.7 is good, if you get the full load temp to 50c or lower, you may find a bit more OCability from that chip, but 2.7 is a good OC

Something else to consider...
Even though you will here 'keep you HT below 1000' some MBs like the HT in the 1200 range on AM2 systems, go figure!

I was concerned about that jump as well...I looked over the surface of the base of the HS before I put it on and it was not rough at all, and looked flat to the naked eye.

Playing CSS the temps never go above 48C, but full on Orthos they stay right around 55C.

Should I be concerned? I'm coming from a prescott system which ran in the 50's idle, so I wasn't too worried, but looking on it now a 20C jump does seem a bit unususal.

Would my idle be higher though if it the HSF wasn't seated correctly or had any other issues? Seems my idle is just about right, so I wonder.

As for the HTT: I'd have to play around with that. Actually, I could just bump it back to 5x and it would be in the 1200 range. I was aiming for something close to 1000 based on some of the advice I read here.

HS surface examples...
I have the BT, And both the Ultra 120 and Extreme versions.
The well known rough BT was just that and had a shallow rut right in the middle.

Both the Thermalright Ultras had a fine milled surface but one was slightly concave and the other slightly convex.
So blacking the HS with a magic marker and quick lap over 800 or higher grit wet/dry sand paper on a very flat surface will give up the truth.
Also, be sure not to use excessive thermal paste but I don't doubt you know that one already

Hmm, I've always thought that lapping the surface of a HSF was just for the "crazies", so I didn't put much thought into the matter other than visually inspecting the surface briefly. I'll have to take a look into that then.

With the thermal paste, I haven't been able to bring myself to subscribe to the "grain of rice" school of thought just yet, but I don't use much more than that.

Perhaps my temps have something to do with the thermal paste "drying" so to speak? How long is it usually before the AS5 will set?

3-5 days.
My personal to do is let it idle 24/7 and 3-4 days later you will see the big drop in idle temps. I use the PC at default durring that time for general use. After the drop I go for the OCing

OK, let's see...I got the new HSF on Tuesday, installed Tuesday night. Overclocked it Thursday night.

So my plan will be to give it a few more days of heavy use, and then see where my temps are. If full load is still in the 50's, I'll most likely take a look at my HSF.
