Shared T1

post #1 of 13
Thread Starter
Ok... im considering living at an apartment that is near the University im going to attend. They say they have four T1 connections, and the way they had explained it to me there is one for every one-hundred persons.

So, im not sure on exactly how good T1 is, and what i should expect from it being split up with atleast 100 people. If i would get a "lesser" connection... id rather drive an hour to get to the University.

T1 is 1.5 up and down.

sooo 1.5 mbps / 100 = slow for you.
post #3 of 13
a T1 should give you a fine connection.

think about this: most people won't use it hardly at all. If you want the bandwidth, just take it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Signal_1

T1 = 1573 kilobits/s upload and 1573 kilobits/s download

Don't forget that every 100 user won't be on at the same time though (usually). With the assumption that 50% of users will be on at peak times, you are looking at only 30kb/s or around 3.5kB/s. You are looking at around 5-7mins to download a 1MB file.
Once again...

T1 also comes in a "bonded" variety, with speeds up to 18 MBps. What speed is the complex claiming?

The real issue is Quality of Service. With DSL my QOS pretty much sucks, given my distance from the Network Office. With T1, transfer is point-to-point, providing much higher reliability of service. Not really a big issue with residential users, but a hot issue commercially.

Most of the people aren't going to be using the connection all the time. I had something very similar in my dorm a few years ago and it was decently fast. Be careful about how much bandwidth you continually use because some universities are strict about that and call it an "abuse" of network policy. At my school if you "abuse" the network 3 times you are expelled. Try and find out your university's policy on torrents too cause mine is real strict about it, i got caught "abusing" the network once an thankfully moved out of housing so i don't have to worry any more.
