Router with prioritisable packets

Thread Starter
I need a router with the function to set a priority on certain packets coming from an IP or port. My father has been whining about me "taking all the internets" when I've only set my µTorrent to run at 150/35 (our line is 207/51), so I need a router that can prioritise packets for his computer or on certain ports.

I would prefer it being as cheap as possible, but also very customizable.

Can that really prioritise packets? And do you know if it can be customised with the DDRT or something like that firmware?

Ok your first object it to find out how you are going to be identifying the packets you want prioritize then you can figure out what kind of router you are gonna get. Also if you want the Dlink Gamers lounge series have a prioritizer in them but it is limited in its definitions to what machine and what port range.

I meant something to prioritise ALL packets coming from one IP over, let's say my IP.

you should really read up on a term called "network stack"

there are 7 layers of networking/hardware... you need a router that can handle at a level 4 layer for packet prioritizing.... The only hardware that can pull this off with decent amount of quality is high end cisco gear...

You might be able to get this done in with a 3rd party firmware like dd-wrt, but it will be all software so it will not handle hardly any traffic...

The only way to really set this up so that you get true packet prioritizing is with cisco gear or equivalent...

There might be away to get this done with one of those x86 versions of router software, and install it on a decent pc and dedicate a whole computer to a router... that would be a more realistic aproach them a cheap ass linksys router...

If you want to play around with dd-wrt, i would recommend a buffalo router...

and if you dont really need the wireless networking, just go with this one...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833162173

these buffalo's are the same broadcom based chipsets that linksys use but are build way better... the run a little faster also... like 66mhz or something...
