Help overclocking a E6420!!

Alright guys I need help overclocking my E6420 and keeping it stable.. First here are my specs:

E6420
OCZ Gold 2GB DDR2-800
MSI P6N Platinum

These should be the ones that affect overclocking I think.. Keep in mind I'm new to this and this is my first time.. First let me explain what I did..

I simply unlinked the Ram and CPU, then I set the FSB clock to 1500.. This was of course going up from 1065 gradually.. I can boot and everything my temperature idles at 28C.. and I'm running at 3.00GHZ now.. But when I run orthos my computer freezes within 2 minutes and 24 seconds.. This link might help you understand my motherboard more.. http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.c...id=2099&page=5

Also when I use cpu-z it says I'm running at 375x6.0 which means 2.25 ghz, and sometimes it jumps to 375x8.0 which means 3.0GHZ, but everything else like dual core monitor, properties, TAT says I'm running at 3.00GHZ ?? Please help...

Oh I'm using stock cooling and my ambient temperature is 24C

First of all go to the bios and DISABLE thermal throttling and speedstep. I dont know which, but one of them lowers your clock speed when not in use. very detrimental to your overclock

second. what is your voltage? at 3GHZ most Core 2 Duos need about 1.37v to 1.45v depending on how good a chip you got.

Couple of things.

First, post some screenshots of cpu-z (all but the last tab), so we can get a better idea of the settings you've used.
Second, input your computer's specs here so we can better assist you.
Finally, the multiplier difference you're seeing is due to the fact that you have SpeedStep enabled. To disable it, you first need to disable "C1E support" and "Intel SpeedStep Technology" in the bios. Also disable "Spread Spectrum" while you're there.

I'm not too familiar with the MSI bios settings, but someone else may be able to guide you to the place where you increase your VDIMM (memory voltages). You might need to set it to 2.1 or 2.2v, depending on the spec of your ram and the allowances of your board (my rev 1.01g board has a max of 2.1v).

the thing holding you back is probably your memory. i've done this a few times and it's always the memory. set your memory voltage manually, set the timings to Auto and you should be fine. your processor does not need more than 1.325 Volts to do this.

set your FSB to 1600 (3.2 GHz) and you should boot with no problems. all E6420s can do this in their sleep. this is not an extreme overclock by any means. after that is accomplished, you can begin the task of manually setting your memory timings until you're stable.

EDIT: you wanna make sure your northbridge volts are right. i'm at work and don't have access to my numbers right now - you can just set them one level above stock and it will probably work without getting hot. also make sure to manually set your PCI-E frequency at 100MHz and your PCI at 33.

Alright, I have on idea what to set the memory voltage to, and I have no idea what to set the timings too, this is my first overclock =\\

In you advanced bios settings, disable EIST. This is the Speed step function that lowers your multi to x6. As for the ram, you should be safe at 2.1v. That should be its default setting. If you are going to overclock, dont go any higher then 2.3v (I dont think you will need to OC the memory anyway).

Depending on what version you have, the timings are:
OCZ28002048ELDCGE-K.......5-5-5-10 (2.0 volts)
OCZ2G8002GK ............5-5-5-12 (2.1 volts)

I have this ram http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227124

So I set that voltage to 2.1
Then I bumped up my CPU voltage to 1.47
