New Hardware = New OS?

post #1 of 9

Alright, so heres my current situation. I just made a huge upgrade to my current build.

Replaced:

P4 3.0ghz (sock 478) ---> C2D E6600 2.4ghz
Asrock P4i65G (sock 478) ---> ECS P4M800PRO-M2 (ver 2.0)
2x512mb Crap PC3200 DDR400 --> 2x1gb PC2-4200 DDR533 Gskill F2-4200PHU1-1GBLA

Now.. I have currently Windows XP Home. And i have been noticing restarts and freezes with my new setup. I thought it was a virus, i scanned my computer with a few different Scanners . AVG, Avast!, Ewido, Panda. And i have a found mabey 3 trojans and some file called "Restarter" or something. Anyways. I know that my old processor was 32-bit and my new one is 64-bit. My question is, is my Windows XP conflicting with my new hardware and causing these new crashes and freezes? If i reinstall Windows XP Home will i be able to take full advantage of the 64-bit of my processor or will i have to go out and buy pro?

Thanks to all that respond

I would go probably upgrade to 64 bit, I was going to say vista, but you don't have a DX10 card so it would be unnecessary

You should always reinstall windows when you change the motherboard. Usually it won't even boot at all if you don't. At least you can back up your data now before you reinstall

Oh and BTW, 64-bit windows xp is kinda a waste of time right now. No advantages yet and it's still hard to get drivers for.

You need to reinstall windows. I've seen much wierder stuff happen that that if you don't.

windows xp pro isn't going to take advantage of your 64bit cpu by itself. you would have to get a 64 bit version of your os to do anything that would take advantage of your 64bit cpu. pro can be either 64 or 32 depending on which version you get. right now though drivers support is iffy. and having a 64bit os doesn't do much unless you get 64 bit programs to go with it or else if your just playing your regular old 32 bit games and running your old 32 bit programs on a 64 bit os it doesn't do much.
