P35-DS3R murdered my overclock

Ok, this has really been irritating me for the past few days and it would be really nice to get some opinions on the subject.

Basically it's looking like my options are:
  1. RMA for another motherboard
  2. Wait for a bios update
  3. Find some magic setting in the bios
  4. Anything you guys suggest

Ok, so heres the problem. Basically I got some killer overclocks with my 965-DS3, but it died, so I figured why not upgrade to a DS3R. So the only part I changed was the motherboard. Here's the issue:

DS3: 2.8Ghz - 1.15v - Stable 10 hours (didn't fail)
DS3R: 2.8Ghz - 1.15v - Stable 2 seconds (failed)
DS3R: 2.8Ghz 1.4V - Stable 10 minutes (failed)

DS3: 3.2Ghz - 1.29v - Stable 10 hours (didn't fail)
DS3R: 3.2Ghz - 1.29V - Stable 2 seconds (failed)
DS3R: 3.2Ghz - 1.4V - Stable 10 minutes (failed)

DS3: 3.5Ghz - 1.42v - stable 1 hour (didn't fail)
DS3R: 3.5Ghz - 1.42v - stable 2 seconds (failed)
DS3R: 3.5Ghz - 1.48v - stable 10 minutes (failed)

So basically the pattern I noticed is that no matter what the voltage or clock speed it always fails no matter what. The only stable overclock I could actually get is 2.1Ghz - 1.35v which is totally lame

What or how is your ram setup. Did you do some metest to make sure that wasnt it.

What is your vmch at, I know my abit didnt like to high of a vmch with a lower fsb. It took far less then I thought it would.

Still if your cant get it straight then I would just rma it. It may be you just got really unlucky and got a bad board.

That sucks, Fishie! I'm having the exact opposite as far as results go with the P35 DS3P.

I was able to stabilize higher OC's with both Quad and Dual Cores on the P35 DS3p and unable to even see these same OC's on the 965P board. I wonder if it's the board?

I got the ram setup exactly the same as on the DS3 since it's like the same bios. Only problem is, that I couldn't set the memory subtimings manually because then it wouldn't boot, so I had to leave them on auto. I tried running the ram anywhere between 1000 and 1200mhz and it made no difference. When using lower FSB and a 2:1 divider I was able to pass memtest at DDR2 1250 so I suspect ram is not the issue.

Yeah I think it's the board too.

Ok, I just got one last idea before I RMA. What do you guys think of changing the northbridge paste? I heard they use a nasty thick pad and one user found that it was getting bad contact and causing instability very similar to mine.

I think I'm gonna try it since newegg doesn't check under the heatsinks

Boy that paste is disgusting. I wasn't kidding when I said that I still have the paste in ONE SOLID PIECE after removing it; I was playing with it last night while waiting for SuperPi to finish.

Try it!

I had stability issues with my old P5NSLi, i got from the egg..turned out the NB cooler had come loose during shipping and some of the crusty thermal paste fell out, so the NB cooler was only making partial contact with the chip. I cleaned it off, replaced it and reseated the cooler...it helped, but the board still sucked.

RAM for the vote.

I replaced (w/AS5) the nasty, caked-on northbridge TIM before I even installed the board.
