P35-DS3R murdered my overclock - Page 4

Dont you have a larger fan for now...I'd keep the NB around 40c if possible..if that don't hold it stable then RMA for sure.

For some reason, the two mobo's I have gotten from newegg, that had loose NB 'sinks, never OC'd very well...ever.

Oh yeah, I got a larger fan

I just popped the side of my case open and rolled up my giant window fan. Got that sucker blowing, and bam, 3.5ghz stable.

So I guess it's a cooling issue after all. The question now is if this issue is normal. It seems to happen when the chipset reaches 50C or so, which doesn't seem too hot. Not so hot that it should cause instability anyway.

I'm gonna RMA anyway. Glad I finally got to the bottom of this!

It causes problems for me! When my NB/Chipset temps reads 50-52C in PCProbe, BF2142 crashes on me, but after slapping a fan on my NB sink and dropping temps to 38C, hasn't crashed yet!

Fishie, at that high of an FSB, your NB is probably approaching 2.5ghz. It is going to cause some heat...aside from that, you need to run..im guessing here..1.5v on the NB for your mobo? You are definitely in need of an icy NB.

I strapped a 40mm right to the NB 'sink, it keeps temps around 38-42c depending on 'in-case' temps. But I am only at 400FSB, my NB is only running @ 444mhz, or 1.7ghz effective speed at 1.4v...far from yours at 470+FSB.

I haven't changed NB volts yet, they are still at stock (whatever that may be, gigabyte doesn't tell you). I tried adding +0.1v and +0.2v but they made absoloutely no difference.

I didn't think the NB would need this much attention since my old 965-DS3 reached 520mhz without any issues. I thought the P35 was supposed to overclock easier and put out a lot less heat. I'm still thinking I need to rma

But from all the reviews I've seen, especially the one on VRzone where a guy got 475x7, it seems like it does. I think I just got a dud somehow.

Yeah, so more cooling is the solution.

Well actually it turned out it wasn't totally stable when chilled, just more stable. It got to 23 minutes then died. This is with the chipset at 33C. So yeah, RMA definately now.

Fishie: I agree, time for RMA.
And the vdroop on the board is supposed to be really low, according to the vr-zone review.
