I'm trying to decide between these two cards. Which one should I get? Keep in mind that my max resolution is 1024 x 768.

If you can, wait a month or so to see if some new drivers improve the performance of the 2900xt. On paper the 2900xt has real nice hardware but the drivers are immature at the moment. If you have to buy NOW then I'd go for the 8800GTS. Good things come to those who wait though.

It's a tough choice. I think they both have their draws... while the 8800GTS has proven to be a strong performer/overclocker at a great price, the X2900XT may prove to outperform it in the near future with more mature drivers - making it an excellent choice. (Right now it still performs pretty well for the price, but not as expected b4 release.) I guess it's kind of a toss-up at the moment.

If I step up to the gtx, then i'd be getting a pny one, is that a decent brand? I'd rather go evga, but at frys its almost a hundred bucks more.

I would have to go with the HD2900XT because of its specs. If the drivers improve, then i would definately go with the ATI card. Comparing them side by side, the ATI card seems to have a larger advantage for DX10.

Get the 8800gts, from what I heard even though the 2900 looks good on paper, its smaller number of texture units makes its slower than the 8800.

8800

The 2900xt specs are good because ATI counts the shader units differently. ALso there shader units are half the speed. The 8800 is cooler and PNY is a fine brand
