Playstation 3 Yellow Dog Linux resource thread !

Thread Starter
This thread was created as a point of information on Yellow Dog Linux for the PS3. All information including software or guides are not my creation, so ALL credit goes to the original creators of such material.

Now I hear you ask ''What is Yellow Dog Linux? '' Well let’s take a read below shall we!

Quote:
Yellow Dog Linux (often abbreviated YDL) is a free software, open-source Linux distribution for Power Architecture hardware. It was first released in 1999 for the Apple Macintosh. Yellow Dog Linux is a product of Terra Soft Solutions, Inc., a Colorado (USA)-based software company specializing in Linux on the Power Architecture.
Yellow Dog Linux is primarily targeted at Apple Macintosh computers, IBM BladeCenter JS2x and Series p5 servers, Mercury XR9, Sony PlayStation 3[1], and several other systems and platforms built around the PowerPC architecture.

What is included?Yellow Dog Linux combines a no non-sense graphical installer with support for a wide range of Power hardware, leading (but not bleeding) edge kernels and stable, functional compilers for code development. And of course, the foundation applications and servers expected for web, database, email, and network services. Greater than 2000 packages are included on the Install DVD

Now that’s it in short.

The Playstation 3 is very much like a PC and is a media hub unlike other consoles currently released today. Sony Contracted Terrasoft industries (Creator of YDL) to create a 3RD party Operating system that could run along side the PS3'S XMB (Cross Media Bar). YDL is very much a cross between Windows and MAC as many other users have also stated. Having an open source OS such as YDL on the PS3 opens up a new world of possibilities.

YDL Basic requirments :

Playstation 3 Console 20GB/60GB ( 60GB More headroom )
USB Mouse
USB Keyboard
Yellow Dog Linux Install DVD

I now hear the vital question '' Wow, but where can I get it. Is it free?’’.

Well there are now 3 main releases of YDL for the PS3. There are free versions and there is a version that will require you to open your wallet.

The following versions are.

5.0 (Free)
5.01 (Free)
5.02 (Costs)

5.0 was there first release of YDL for the PS3 and was the 1st YDL release to feature EI7 as the easy to use GUI for it.

Quote:
v5.0 introduces E17 as the default desktop environment, granting users a new kind of desktop experience.

http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/products/ydl/

There where a few bugs and improvements to be made. Thus 5.01 was created. 5.01 From what I know and can find out is only different in that it now fully supports the PS3 WIFI! 5.02 was later created with al lthe abilities of the previous versions and I am not sure of any differences yet just that it now costs.

The Free versions are YDL 5.01 and YDL 5.0 for the PS3 which can be downloaded LEGALLY on many FTP servers that can be found HERE ( 3.5-3.7GB )

If you are looking to buy YDL 5.02 Then you can do so HERE

Ok wonderful. Now that you have gotten your copy of YDL I now hear you ask '' Ok great I have a PS3 and YDL...Now how in gods name do I install it? ''

Well I can’t put it any simpler than to refer you to the Official guide from Terrasoft industries HERE

Even though the guide is labelled for YDL 5.02 its doesn’t matter as the Install method as far as I know is pretty much identical.

**NOTE** To use/Install YDL you need a USB Mouse and Keyboard.
**NOTE** Terrasoft reccomend having the latest PS3 Firware being install Prior to YDL installation. Latest Firmware updates HERE

Now here is the warning. Before installing YDL you are REQUIRED to format your PS3 HDD. Unfortunately this means you will lose any Game saves, Photo’s, movies stored on your PS3 so BACK THEM UP BEFORE PROCEEDING!

**NOTE** A full format can take up to 3hours 30mins

PS3 Preparation

There are just a few things you must do with your PS3 before it is prepared to
Install Yellow Dog Linux.

1. Attach your PS3 to a hi-definition TV or monitor using an HDMI (digital)
or Component (5 RCA jacks) cable. Composite (yellow RCA jack) is not
supported as the resolution is too low.

2. Attach the game controller, a USB keyboard and mouse to your PS3. The
game controller will be used to conduct all GameOS functions. The USB
keyboard and mouse will be used once you enter the YDL installer.

3. Power on your PS3. If this is the first time you have used your PS3, you
will be prompted to Select a language, Select a time zone, Set the time &
date, and Set the username (more easily done with a USB keyboard).

4. If you have used your PS3, BACK UP ALL GAME, MUSIC, & PHOTO DATA
before formatting the drive as all data will be lost.

5. Select: Settings ==> System Settings ==> Format Utility ==>
Format Hard Disk ==> Yes ==> Yes

6. Then select a partition setting for the hard disk: Custom

7. You will be presented with option to "Allot 10GB to the Other OS" or
"Allot 10GB to the PS3 System." If your PS3 has a 20GB drive and you
select 10GB for the PS3 System, this leaves roughly 6.5GB for Linux (not
enough for a full install, but ample for the default YDL install).

8. Your PS3 will now format its internal drive.

9. Press "X" on the controller to EXIT which will cause your PS3 to reboot.

Then I hear the resounding statement '' I thought for YDL on the PS3 you needed a HDTV ''. Well luckily no you dont !.

As you may also notice in the above quote it states that you need a digital/HDTV to use YDL. Now even thought on a HDTV it may look better you can still enjoy it on an SDTV ( Normal TV'S ).

Unfortunately when installing YDL you have to specify that you are using a low resolution TV type. However not all is lost as there is an easy guide on how to do this found here:

YDL on SDTV: http://ps3wiki.qj.net/index.php/YDL_on_SDTV

Well that’s just about it really folks.

However here are some videos on Youtube that show YDL in action on the PS3:

Brief but good:

Terrasoft employee being interviewed on YDL for PS3:

My personal thanks goes out to Terrasoft for YDL and guides and to the creators of the YouTube videos.

More coming once I gather any more needed Info. If you have any info that you think may benefit this thread pleas PM me.

Yes I managed to get it all setup yesterday. It took a while as I wasn't use to the commands and the text install interface. However once I go it all sorted and got my GUI running its a great OS. I cant put it to its full potential yet as im running off a SDTV. But so far its very fast.

Yeah its a great OS to have mate. Possiblities are nearly endless due to all the different apps you can use. The PS3 is pretty much the best media hub out there IMO.
i'm glad to hear that. when i first got my ps3 and looked into doing it everyone was saying that YDL wasn't that good yet and it wasn't useful for anything except to say " i have linux on my ps3"

Well in the very early stages there where a few support issues but there all gone now. Its a very fast and efficient OS. Not only that its very easy to get the Updated packages using the software update feature. Its a useful OS to have on many ways that are pretty self explnatory. Once I get a HDTV then all will be good lol.
