Second Graphics Card & Third (& Fourth?) Monitor.

Thread Starter
I want to expand. Two monitors is not really enough. Here is my situation:

I am currently running two 19" FPDs at 1280x1024. I want any other monitors to be the same as this.

I want all my monitors to be DVI.

My current card is a 512MB GeForce 7600GS with two DVI ports.

I want my new card to be passively cooled, like my current one.

My current one will move to my second PCI-E slot, and my new one will take it's place.

I want my monitor to be a non-widescreen 19" flat panel, at 1280x1024.

The monitor(s) don't need a great refresh rate. I have one which I can use for gaming and stuff. Mostly it'll be text on the other monitors. Better viewing angles would be way more important to me.

I don't play games much at all, I run Linux, and I play UT2004 and Halo under wine, this could change with UT2007 of course, so It'd be nice to know I'm covered, but not essential.

I have to have an nVidia card. The ATI drivers are useless.

Would it be worth getting a cheap 8-series card like http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=587921
?

Am I just paying for DX10 support I won't be using?

As to monitors, what options do I have?

I'm probably looking at just over £250 budget if I can get two monitors.

On another note, what do you think would be the best arrangement, a panorama of them, or putting two on wall brackets and having a square of them?

im pretty sure you'll need to get a card that matches your existing one if you want to install them both in the same system. i dont know the specifics of your hardware but to run dual video cards you need to be sli or crossfire capable, sli in your case since its an nvidia card. you could also get a multi-monitor card that supports more than 2 monitor like this:
http://ati.amd.com/products/firemvse...V2400PCIe.html
which can manage 4 monitors through dvi.

From what I gather, SLI isn't necessary for using two cards, but you need it for using two cards for graphics. If you are literally using one just as ports, it's fine, SLI is just for splitting the graphics processing across the cards.

As far as I am aware, I'd like some confirmation this is true.

I also need nVidia cards, the ATI drivers for Linux are useless. Totally, so it's a no-go.

No other responses?

You can use two different cards without SLi to just run monitors. I believe the 1st card would be used to run games.

Yeah, so I'd just get a better card and then move my old one to just driving monitors.

Any suggestions on monitors to get? Or whether the 8-series cards are worth it without DX10?

Yes

I say 8 series is worth it without directs 10 because they have a more flexible arcitecture are fairly cheap and have a higher resale value as time progresses. But yes have your old one drive the monitors

I'd personally say that the midrange-lowend dx10 cards out aren't really worth it.

7900's and 19*0's play dx9 better at a lower or equal cost, and when the high end dx10 cards(8800 ect) have trouble with dx10, you know that the midrange-lowend cards don't have a hope in hell of playing it.

Get a good 7 series or a 19*0 card rather than a midrange dx10 card. Or, get a 8800gts(or better)

He wants passively cooled, which rules out anything higher than a 7600 GT really in the 7 series, and there's very few passively cooled 8 series cards. Also, he said he didn't want ATI. Here's a passively cooled 8600 GT that should fit the bill nicely.

As for monitors, you should probably try to match whatever monitors you already have. Then you'll be getting performance (and aesthetics) you're already comfortable with. However, if this is not possible, then just get any monitor with a response of at least 8 ms and the highest contrast ratio you can find. All this might be hard to fit into a 250 GBP budget, though.
