ThermalTake Extreme Spirit-II or the Noctua NC-U6? - Page 3

I have a Silverstone 110 CMF fan... it runs 400 rpms faster than the Tuniq's and is slightly/considerably louder...

fill in your system... we have no idea what mobo you have

but it should not be necessary to upgrade your Spirit regardless

btw the fan on the spirit is JUNK, mine died and my firends died. caused my system to lock up overnight when it stopped spinning, this was after 2 weeks. i got a thermalright hr-05 and couldnt be happier. its a far superior cooler under heavy loads.

Check it

I finally broke down my puter to prep it with the additional cooling I had purchased so when my Q6600 comes in tomorrow I am ready notice the overkill on tiny HS all over the board... I lapped the SB cooler and while I was at it I decided to lap the Swiftech copper Mosfet HS hehehe completely useless but since I had to replace the contact tape and I had the sand paper all ready to go I went for it hahah insane overkill gotta love it

okay, my system specs at the moment are:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
Tuniq Tower 120 (CPU cooling 'duh!')
Thermaltake Extreme Spirit-II (Northbridge cooling)
Asus P5B Deluxe/WIFI
2GB 800Mhz Crucial Ballistix DDR2 RAM
500GB Seagate 7900.1rpm Hard Drive
7600GT Graphics Card (going onto an 8800 GTS 640MB)
Seasonic M12 600W

i hope that helps, but as of now, i have a couple of questions htat i like to know straight and in detail:

1. As i have mentioned, i have a Tuniq Tower 120 right now cooling my CPU, but because the way it is ositioned, the fan inside is blowing the hot air outside the case behind it as of course, but because of this, it has limited my space inside which will not let me seat my Noctua NC U6 on the Northbridge chipset, so right now the Thermaltake Extreme Spirit-II is what's cooling my Northbridge. however, it seems that the Noctua NC U6 can provide better cooling, am i correct on this?

if thats so, may i ask, if i were to reposition my Tuniq Tower 120 so that the Noctua NC U6 can fit inside, the fan will be blowing the hot air upwards to the case, and knowing my case isnt like yours, there is no way whatsoever to place a fan on top to exhaust it elsewhere, so i am asking, by doing that, would it be a bad idea? like would the hot air just come right back enabling to heat up more inside or whatever?

2. Because i am wanting to replace the Tuniq Tower 120's fan, there is alot of saying about the Silverstone FM121, but it only spins 400rpm faster, which i dont quite see the point (correct me if im wrong on this), may i ask, what is the better or the best 120mm fan out there (as well as being silent) that i can replace the TT120's fan instead?

Very impressive USlatin.

Do you think it is possible for an HR-05 to fit in place of your noctua? He could use that since I think it is a little thinner.

Yes it it but you might have problems with it if you want a fan on it...??? then again I have my Noctua towards the CPU side quite fat for better clearance from the GTS for the fan to ample room for air to go in.... but the HR might work perfect if you seat it the opposite way with the fan sucking air through it... if you are going to do that I would tape the sides on the HR for better guided air-flow...

Orbis:
_ The Noctuam ight very well be better cooling than the Spirit if you have a 17CMF fan on it but I have not tested with a thermal probe to compare and know of no one who has... yet IMO it seems it would be
_ If you can't cut a hole to place a 120mm fan on the top of your case then you might have build up of hotter air in the whole case which would really be a dad thing for all your temps... if you get a 110 CMF fan on the TT then there will be no way for the rear exhaust fan to keep up so that is practically guaranteed build up
_ The TT's fan rocks, it moves above average CMF's in terms if all 120mm.... not a lot more... but it is a "good" fan and there really is no need to upgrade it at all... I think it moves about 6- - 70 CMF but not sure so pls don't quote that
_ BUT, if you want more air... then the extra 400rpm mean a ton more air... at those speeds things change faster... you go from 60 - 70 CMF to 110! It IS noticeably louder but not horribly IMO... you still have a speed control knob so you can bring it down to 2000 and keep it there and have the extra 400rpms in reserve for when you need more cooling and don't mind the extra noise... I run mine 100% 24/7...

Keep this in mind... if you want the Silverstone (~$15) then you will have the TT's fan (with it's speed control!) which you can use to place it on the top of your case! All you need is some tools which you could borrow, then some time and patience making the mod... then you will e able to also fit the Noctua on the HR... it is work... but a killer air setup in the end! Especially if you lapp everything

i have an Antec SLK1650.

and to USlatin, thanks very much for your reply to my questions, it has helped me gain a better understanding.

now, to tell u, if i were rotate the Tuniq Tower so the fan exhaust hte air upwards, it wll b blowing air at hte bottom of the Power Supply and i think its a closed bottom as well. i assume that will just only heat my Seasonic M12 by a few degrees. not good i suppose.

unless, i rotate it so that hte fan is blowing on the side of the Northbridge cooler, like the Noctua NC U6 fins. dont know if that will be good, even with a 70mm fan attached to it.

and about the Silverstone FM121, i take it that hte extra 400rpm is definately worth it then?

and talking about sound issues, isnt it possible to silence it? like it being a ball-bearing fan, cant u like open it and add a drop of oil to it? or like grease it up? thus making it silence or somewhere near that?

and i would like to say, i do tend to have all fans running at full speed everytime i want to go on when i do video Editing and maybe 3D rendering.
