Need a Gentoo push please.

Thread Starter
I am doing some testing on Linux Distros in VMWare.

I have successfully installed Fedora, Mandriva, Ubuntu, Suse.

I am a linux noob, so Gentoo is proving to be a bit more difficult.

Few questions.

1. I boot from the install cd, but it looks like it loads like a live cd. What command will get my on the road to installing it to the hard drive.

2. I have read a lot of help sites and to start installing gnome, I am supposed to use emerge commands. Sound easy enough, but I get an error:

emerge: command not found

I may be in over my head, but I would really like to include results from gentoo in my folding tests. I think if I can just get things moving, I can follow the guides from there.

Thanks in advance.

1. There should be an install icon on the desktop when your on the live CD.
2. Depending on which Distro you go with, but it will be through console, Also, I recommend you use Ubuntu feisty for a starter OS.

Thanks for your response.

When you boot from the live cd, you dont get a desktop to start with. I have no problem running Ubuntu or Suse and know enough to find my way around. I am doing performance testing on different distros specifically for folding and at least wanted to be able to include gentoo in the test. I will see if I can figure it out, or just leave it out of the test.

Gentoo is complex to install, you basically install by copying files to the hard drive, and then switching to running off the hard drive, then installing via the package manager.

Go to the Gentoo site and get their handbook. That will give you steps for the install.

Gentoo is the ricer distro as far as linux is concerned. If you don't get it via the handbook just keep trying

There isn't going to be much difference between each distro. The biggest choices you have are kernel and DM and the package managing system.

All being said I'll throw my 2 cents in. Scrap linux. GPL is crap! Try using FreeBSD. I used to be a big linux advocate until I discovered BSD.

Thank you everyone for the help. The first thing I did wrong was downloaded the minimal install which I am sure was designed for people that knew what they were doing. After getting the right copy of Gentoo, the install went just about as easy as the other distros. Of course I would have know this right off the bat if I had read the handbook.

Up and running now. Thanks.

I don't think you can use Wine, or play any Linux games like Quake or UT with BSD can you?

And Knitelife, could you please post the results of your folding tests after you finish? I would also recommend trying Sabayon Linux, it is a binary distro that is based on and is fully compatible with Gentoo (it is currently number 7 on Distro Watch).
