Do you let everyone know that you didn't sell out on the first night, and still have phones to get customers?

OR

Pretend they sold out so people won't buy them for a few days, but think they sold out everywhere?

Looks like they are trying to do both. They are trying to keep the hype by making it look like they didn't sell out, but saying "we don't know" to get people back in the store to check.

Well, for the first few weeks the PS3 sold out...because there weren't that many.

The Wii sold out because it's innovative, and nearly everyone wants to try it.

The iPhone won't sell out, because Apple probably made millions of them. The article says up to 30,000 phones sold per hour(across the country?); that's could be as much as 240,000 phones per day! Sure that'll slow down, but it's still a lot of sales, and if Apple made 10,000,000 phones, they're going to have overstock for a long time.

(up to) 30,000 phones per hour for 3 hours for one day is still less than 100,000 phones.

From what my roommate told me I believe that there was supposed to be around 1 million immediately available upon launch, with projected sales of 4 million by year end.

Meh, beats me. The iPhone is one piece of technology I won't be getting, so I'm not that interested in it. My point was they made more phones than needed.

I could be totally wrong, that was just from memory. I'm sure if I asked him he would know the name of the chinese iPhone factory owner's 2nd cousin, but I really don't want to get him started.
