Network 2 pc (1 is a Dell)

Thread Starter
Guys,

A friend asked me go and have a look at his pc the other day. He was trying to set up a simple network with crossover RJ45. He would set up a new network on both pcs but neither would work. It always came back saying 'limited or no connectivity'.
One pc his mate built and one is a Dell dimension 4300.
Now i tried it myself a few times and it just kept coming up with the same thing, so I took the dell home and tried it here.
For some reason it wont accept a network from any pc. Ive changed cables and pcs and every time it comes up with the same thing 'limited or no connectivity'.
I even installed a pci ethernet card in the dell and still no joy.

Has anyone got any ideas why this could be happening??

I set up works network and they are all Dell so could it just be the case that one is Dell and the other one isnt??

Thanks as always
Nick

Crossover you say? You need to configure the IP manually then, go to your network properties and assign the IP, subnet and DNS+Gateway to (respective order):

192.168.0.1, 255.255.255.0, 192.168.0.2

and on the other computer:

192.168.0.2, 255.255.255.0, 192.168.0.1

That should make it work, let me know if it doesn't

Are you using network connection wizard ?
Does the custom computer have more then one ethernet port ?
Is the cross-over cable your using homemade , has it worked in the past ?

In that case, what GonX sayd And if that won't work, then check if he has 2 ports..if so , bridge them. I had also this problem, problem was solved after I bridged my 2 ports. And I had manual IP on the pc that used internet from the other pc.
