It came the time when I got sick of the performance of a single drive and I want to try something new: RAID 0.

Candidates:

- Hitachi DeskStar 7K160 - 160GB SATA2 8MB cache
- Samsung Spinpoint P HD160JJ/HJ - 160GB SATA2 8MB cache
- Samsung Spinpoint S HD161HJ - 160GB SATA2 8MB cache
- Seagate Cuda 7200.10 - 160GB SATA2 8MB cache
- Seagate Cuda 7200.9 - 200GB SATA2 8MB cache
- WD WD1600JS "Special Edition" - 160GB SATA2 8MB cache

There may be performance differences, but frankly all I need is silence, a RAID 0 setup should be quite fast anyway. They are all priced roughly the same, give or take a couple of $.

What do you guys think?

Reps are waiting in line, as usual.

*EDIT I've changed the title of the thread, as I am trying to focus mainly on the reliability aspect. You are most welcomed to post your opinion or to cast your votes, if you haven't already. It's been a successful pool in my opinion so far, I have found out what are the best known HDD brands and the most popular.

*EDIT Changed the title again What do you say about this one? Prices are more or less alike, capacity is more or less alike, but what gives the upper hand? 16 MB of buffer per HDD, or a third 8MB buffered HDD in the stripe?

Thanks for the thoughts, reps added.

I was searching back and forth and there aren't many reviews that compare them from a "noise" point of view... but there are things I've found.

Seagates - I have a 7200.10, usually it's quiet, but when it's searching it can be a bit annoying (AV scan, defrag). Some say the 7200.9 series was quieter, specifically the 120GB drive, but what about the 200GB one?

WD - I haven't seen much of negative stuff, they seem to be the best in regards to noise, and pretty good performers also. The certainly seem to be the most popular on the EGG, 48/48 5 start reviews.

Samsung S - very silent, highly appreciated because of this. In the end it may be between the Spinpoint S and the WD (the samsung already has a vote, 10x CD)

For Hitachi - I can't really forget the 60GXP I had not too long ago. Times have passed, but are they any better?

Thoughts???

I vote for the WD as well. I've gone through a few and all were nice and quiet.
'bout time.

I thinks it was Anandtech, that did the HDD review I read..the Hitachi HDD's with the 'silent operation' mode enabled, were the quietest HDD's tested....at the cost of ~30mbs though...

I will try to find the review.

More research: newegg reviews.

Summary (in brief):

WD 1600JS - almost 400 reviews, over 80% pleased or very pleased

Hitachi - a few reviews, but they seem to be excellent; I remember that review on anandtech, I can't find it either. They seem to be really silent.

Seagate - people say they're quiet, but I don't quite agree, I have one, and they're not what I would call "quiet".

Samsung - extremely quiet, good reviews en-gros, but quite a some have complained about their reliability.

I'm leaning more and more between the Hitachi and the WD.

Any other thoughts?
