Retail, upgrade, or OEM home premium or ultimate

Thread Starter
I am trying to decide whether to get Vista Home premium or Ultimate. I like some of the features like the system restore in ultimate but I don't need other features that come with it. I also would like to know your ideas on what way I should go as type (OEM, reatail, upgrade). I have windows xp sp2 currently and when I build a new comp I will get vista 64 bit but should I go with a dual boot of xp and vista or should I buy the cheaper upgrade and re-use my old hard drive? If you do suggest the option of dual boot should I get the retail verson or the OEM version? The reatil version can legally be re-installed so...that means I would have to buy OEMs for every time I rebuild again. Which would be better in the long run, OEM or retail? Also is there an easy way to transfer all your programs from one operating system to another without having to reinstall all of them again? Could just transfering the program files from one hard drive to another work?

Well, basically the rule with OEM, is that you can install it on 1 PC only. Retail allows you to activate your copy multiple times. If I was to buy XP, I would buy it OEM because it's really easy these days to ask for a new License Key over the phone, but with Vista, I'm sure it's a complete other story, if you want to reactivate, you better have some story that could make the Microsoft Tech guy nearly cry to give you another activation key, because Vista is among the #1 pirated softwares today. So if you can, go retail, I got the Vista Ultimate Full DVD (not the upgrade) with both 64-bit and 32-bit CDs for $199.99 shipped on Ebay, you might want to check Ebay, there can be some darn good deals there. Just make sure it's factory sealed and there is the red band sticking out (it's a way to make sure it has never been opened).

Home Premium Retail. Save yourself some money instead of getting Ultimate, and then use it to buy the retail, not OEM, version of Home Premium.

I will get the OS off of ebay because they are cheaper there and i'm still deciding between ultimate and home premium but I may go with ultimate because I can use it for me and maybe sell it to my dad for his company because he would want some of the features in it if I decide I don't want ultimate.

Re-activating with vista is the same as it was with xp, (trust me I have moved to three new machines and called them more times then I would like to count due to reinstalls)

Just give them a call, same question they always ask

"and how many machines is this copy of windows installed on"

Just one, Just one....

Save up, spend a bit more and do what sandiegoskyline advised and get a Retail version. Trust me OEM's are a ****in' ballache.

Remember if you opt for an OEM version, you will have to buy a piece of Hardware to go along with it thats how it works. My Pappie bought a HD, could have prolly got retail... For him though OEM is good, he won't ever need to reinstall his OS, unless he totally shafts it somehow. For guys like us though ime it's just a pain in the ass tbph.

Btw the phone activation of the Vista OEM is just as straight foward.

Tech: 6 digits please
You: 123456
Tech: How many computers is this version installed on?
You: Just the one, thanks .
Tech: Are you ready to receive your activation code?
You:
Tech: Blah blah blah.
You: Thanks!
Tech: Thank you for calling MS, have an AMAAAAZIING day.

Yea, I've called em a few times.. Must be company policy to end on that note, makes me lol everytime.
