also I have a computer with a currupt OS and I need to reinstall, problem is the guy who gave it to me doesn't have the coa. It was custom built by somebody else years ago and I can't do anything with the hard drive because of a currupt OS (read my other post) and I was sondering if I could find the coa number somewhere on the harddrive maybe in the system files or something. If I get the coa I can maybe get a replacement disk right?

Well, my last two cents, After checking I have installed 15 copies of OEM windows (95% XP and 5% Vista) have done many installs / reinstalls and machine changes with each and have NEVER ran into a problem with Microsoft. The OEMs have the same amount of installs / hardware changes that the retails have before it prompts for a new key,

I don't know why I would spend the additional money to get a retail version of the same software, Maybe someone could enlighten me, I have not seen a specific reason yet
