But as I understood it, they didn't go back and redo all of the models and textures for HL1:Source. Which would be necessary if you expect an engine replacement to make faces look better...realistic faces are going to need more polygons and texture effects than the original.
For an analogy, think of the PC port of GTA:San Andreas. It went from the lowly PS2 capabilities to the much more powerful DX9, and what did that get it? Not much, beyond the ability to do higher resolutions and use the original large textures (the textures in the PS2 were downsamples of the original art). Because the polygon count was still low, characters still looked just as blocky on the PC as they did on the PS2.
