What is Linux BEST for? - Page 2

Its awesome at limiting your chances of doing basic things...like wireless networking lol.

I guess the OpenOffice product is kinda cool. I would prefer Linux for servers any day of the week but I threw Fedora on my laptop awhile back and it took me an hour to get the Wireless working with WEP encryption. After I managed to get it working I realized I could do the same thing in Windows in 2 seconds.

The one thing I'll give Linux credit for is that its open source. Other than that I vote "To hell with it" lol

Actually It's quite functional, You just have to know what your doing. It's a different kernel so it's obviously not going to run every single windows app or game you want. I really hope you dont think linux is a POS, It's mainly used to run hardcore servers by hardcore companies.

Yeah thats my thinking...

However since most of us have no reason to run a server with a 24-disk RAID Array I think Windows is ok.

I positively hate Windows in server environments...

I use GNU/Linux for my everyday OS... I play my MP3's, burn CD's and DVD's, watch TV, play DVD movies, view PDF's, surf the net, email, write documents, spreadsheets, create presentations etc... All with software that is open source and freely available. I'm also an avid gamer and I'm pretty much able to play any game out there by using a Linux port or Wine.... Oh and it makes a kicking server too...

Then I idolize you lol

I couldn't get WINE working to save my life. What about Command and Conquer and Company of Heroes?

I thought most of these games needed DirectX ... what good is OpenGL then?

Yup. No memory leaks, errors, things like that in that OS...
I was using Mandrakelinux 10.1

Anyways...I do think the while I was using it, Linux has a faster networking capability. Windows just wasn't designed to browse quickly or something...I dono.

Just my PII 350Mhz monster with 196mb of ram really walked my parents' athlon 2600+ with 512mb of ram with xp....everything on the web was just much faster using the same release of firefox and connected to the same router.

You can game on linux, though it's not the intension nor the point. I prefer to keep my gaming on XP/Vista. I also use linux for everyday use, I only boot windows if im feeling the need to play a game of bf2 etc.
