Triple Monitors

Thread Starter
I have an 8800GTX on Windows XP and was wondering how to get three monitors hooked up with 3D acceleration. I only have one PCI-E slot. I've seen the Matrox TripleHead2Go stuff, but it's 300$!! I figure there's got to be a better way to do this! I'm kinda desparate because I already have 3x 21" Dell Trinitrons set up next to each other and I would hate to see one of the best CRT's I've ever owned go to waste!

How am I gunna get decent gaming performance outta that? The point here is to not only have a functional third monitor in Windows, but also to have games such as Half-Life 2 to be spanned accross all three, so it feels like I'm being surrounded and have peripheral vision.

You have to have a game that support multiple monitors for peripheral vision. This usually means flight simulators. And if you spent that much money on three monitors, buy a new mobo with two pcie slots and buy another gfx card.

You might try getting an s-video to vga converter or something, but I'm not sure if that would work and you probably wouldn't get the resolution you are looking for.

Heh, two of those monitors were 5 bux at the salvation army and one was free, I don't have any money to burn. Nvidias drivers support spanning, I've tested a few games across two monitors although its not realy playable because you're looking at a deadspot the whole time inbetween the monitors.

Edit: Since the GTX supports HD output wouldnt you think It'd be possible somehow to get a good res outta that? I have no idea what kinda connectors I'd need though.

I think for what you want to do the Matrox triple head is your best bet. This is due to the fact most games do not support such resolutions.

Also, how do I set up drivers? I have a GF440MX but the latest forceware for the 8800 doesnt support that.

I used to run older programs (quake 3) as a window instead of full screen across two monitors but I can't seem to remember how I did it. The GTX can sure handle that, but for newer games, I'm not so sure. I've long since been using only one monitor. The TripleHead2Go is made specifically for 3 monitors, but i probably wouldn't spend hundreds on it. I don't think there is a solution that is cheap and effective at the same time.
