e6420/P5N-E SLI: How can I get HONEST core temp readings?

Hi all,

I was really happy with the load temp readings (core temps in the mid-upper 30s folding and low-mid 40s running Orthos) I was getting from this setup. That is, until I noticed that my idle temps, which I normally don't pay much attention to, were only a couple degrees above ambient (low-mid 20s) I know the Scythe Infinity is a pretty good cooler, but can't believe this sucker's idling that cool with 1.41 vcore.

The problem is, Core Temp and SpeedFan both read the exact same core temperatures and TAT doesn't work on this board. Can you suggest anything else that I can try in an effort to get honest core temp readings?

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Elwood

Personally i found speedfan is ok for high temps, but for low temps it goes off.

I use tat (Intel Thermal Analysis Tool) alot better, always shows a real reading from who i spoken to.

http://www.pureoverclock.com/download.php?det=6

Give it a try, work great, also has a stress test built in.

Thanks for the suggestion, but TAT doesn't work on this board. When I try to start TAT, I get the following error message:

Error enumerating On Demand Clock Modulation support.
Terminating Tool

One thing that I forgot to note in the first post. I'm using Core Temp .94 (because .95 causes spontaneous restarts) and says my processor is an "E6500 Conroe" and reports the Tjunction as 85C. I remember reading somewhere that if the Tjunction is not right it throws the temp readings off by 15 degrees. Anybody know what's the correct Tjunction for an e6420?

Isn't TAT only for Intel chipsets? I have found it doesn't work with my 680i chipset. You are using a 650i, that could be your problem.

SpeedFan works, but it gives the same unbelievably low idle temp readings as Core Temp .94 . I'll give Everest a try.

Thanks.

your welcome. its low cuz u got a good cooler. im 30 idle w/ 78F as ambient. i have 2 intake and 2 outtake. TAT and the new CoreTemp show too high of temps. the older coreTemp and speedfan show same which i believe it is correct. im not believing TAT and CoreTemp .95 cuz they say that my cpu is 65F idle. When i touch the base of my heatsink i do not feel anything close. i feel warm to nothing. Now if it was burning hot then i would be in some poop.

Keep in mind that most temp monitors assume you have a tjunction of 85c, while some of the C2D/C2Q have a tjunction of 100c. So you would have to add an additional 15c to both your load/idle temps to get more accurate temps.

Hi luckii,

I just loaded Everest free edition, but I can't find where it has any temperature monitoring capability. Should I be trying a different version?

I'd like to believe that my core temps are that low, but the idea that any air cooler hold idle temps within 2 degrees of ambient is more than I can swallow.

yes that is true. i guess add 15c?? how much would that come out to be? im 30c w/ coreTemp so 45c idle. doesn't seem too good. =( as for everest, im not sure where it is for it doesnt show up what i need. others just told me it was a good temp/voltage monitor.
