Booting From USB Flash Drive

Thread Starter
My friend and I are building a computer for the first time and some people we know who work at Intel gave us an interesting tip. Flash technology is ridiculously faster than a regular hard drive because there are no moving parts and if we installed the operating system on a flash drive then the boot time will be almost instantaneous. So, my friend and I are putting everything together for our computer and we are wondering if we could put the USB flash drive inside the case and treat it as the first hard drive. If so... how. Any tips, info, or guides are appreciated. If you think this is not a good idea, please tell me why.

Thanks

I was in the understanding that flash was slower than hard disk drives. But where will you install programs, or are you planning on getting a HUGE flash disk?

My plan was to have a small flash disk (2-4 GB) that would just hold the OS and a separate 400GB HD for everything else

The USB connection will still bottleneck, no matter how fast the on-chip processes go ...

No way will booting from a flash drive be faster than, say, an SATA drive ...

The USB standard just can't handle the throughput of other interfaces such as SATA or IDE ...
