BF2142 Freeze/Screech/Crash FIX!

I have personally been experiencing this exact problem ever since the 1.25 patch and CANNOT get 2142 to run for more than 1 hour without dying, but here is a FIX! Anybody else out there with this issue, let me know how you fare! I'm trying right now.

After endless hours skipping forum after forum, here is the best I can describe my situation... Basically my PC freezes with a constant sound loop only while playing BF2142, or a screech of death (that sounds much like a fax modem, but I have no modem installed).

I run ATiTool version 0.26 and have been running it for a couple of months without a problem. Now, before you think it's definitely a hardware problem, it's not. I have 3 different PC's, and they all freeze only with bf2142.

I have tried everything, I changed every piece of hardware on my PC, installed windows again, bf2142 again... etc. Still froze. So then I simply turned off these two services (via MSCONFIG) from punkbuster and guess what? the problem went away completely.

That is until April 17th, when Evenbalance (punkbuster) made it mandatory to run these files to play in a punkbuster server. So after not freezing for days, I was forced to run these files again to be able to play (if you dont run them you get a "losing key packets" error). Anyway, I ran the services and again, I froze. The only way to get out of this state is to reboot the PC.

2 other people I know (and who knows how many else) were having this same problem.

So I had to do some major, back to basic thinking and figured that the main thing these PC's freezing had in common was that they had ati cards and running atitool. So just for kicks, we uninstalled atitool, this was about 1 1/2 weeks ago, we have not frozen since.

To make sure this was not a coincidence, I reinstalled ATiTool and within 5 minutes of playing BF2142, the PC froze. First time since I had uninstalled it that it froze.

I have been through hell and back trying to figure out what was causing my freezing problem, and I think I found that ATitool and pnkbstrA and B are not "getting along".
EDIT: I tried it... SEEMS TO WORK! YIPEEEEE!

Known for awhile that PB was a resource hog when it checks your packets, so it's not surprising that it conflicts with other applications. Whoever made PB hired some absolutely horrible coders and needs to fire them all and get some that actually know how to create decent code

Uninstalled ATITool remotely just now (I'm at work), so I'll check tonight/next couple days to see if I still freeze. Problem with a random crash is that you can't recreate it to test

Well it seems to have worked for me... I gamed for over an hour last night without a crash and that's longer than it ever let me before! Let's just hope to god that this truly is the fix!

Wanted to stop by & post what fixed the problem with the sound freezing in a sound loop.
Which of course is only remedied by a reset of the PC.

I always use Game Mode, because if you don't you cannot enable Creative X-Fi sound in BF2142..
Ok I tried a few things, setting my processor's affinity so it only used CPU0.
I do not have a dual core CPU, but I run a P4 3.4 EE Gallatin, which technically has 2 cores..
I tried using hardware sound on the highest setting & it did fine, but it was not like X-Fi set to Ultra...

I started to toy around with some settings under the Creative Panel..
The first setting that says X-Fi CMSS-3D is what I changed that fixed my problem so far.
If you have that drop down box set to Stereo Xpand then change it to Stereo Surround.
I enable my EAX, set it to 1.6dB
Also enabled my graphic EQ, but that, as well as upping the dB on the EAX is optional..

That fixed it so I could set my audio to the highest setting the game has, I also could stop setting processor affinity, hopefully it will work for somebody else.

I must add that after I made that change the game sounded amazing, missles shot by & I could hear them coming in a way unlike before, also of somebody pulls out the knife it will scare the $hit out of you if they are right up on you..

I am not 100% sure this is a fix for this problem yet, but so far I have been able to play longer than ever before, no freezes so far & it has had a few hours of play to test it out.

If this help anybody please let me know, and spread the word so people can quit limiting their processors, and or having less than the desired sound that they should have with this game.

No more freezing after 6 hrs of str8 gaming, only thing I have found is that the sound sets itself back to high after closing & re-opening the game.
Always check your audio setting just in case

Stereo X-pand seems bad, and Stereo Surround setting is the way to go.

I have a ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe motherboard, and it turns out after going into my bios & looking under the configuration of onboard devices, I found that my onboard sound was set to auto, I disabled it, saved, and exited..
Reboot & you can enable Creative Ultra quality sound.

The problem was horrible in Vista for me, but not it loads & plays, which before all I'd get as soon as I tried to open the audio tab in Bf2142 it would crash to desktop right away, now it seems to work great..

I have to also add the game plays much better, and has mre FPS in Vista..

Hello all.

I apologize for posting in such an old thread, but I believe this is the better place for it.

For some time now I've been plagued with that looping sound crash under Vista. It happened with almost all the games I had, happened while using the computer to browse, while watching movies, etc...

I searched a lot in forums, heard a lot of people had the same problem, but the apparent causes and possible solutions were all different. Graphics cards drivers, sound drivers, antivirus software, chipset drivers, software running in the background...

This thread was one of the many I added to my bookmarks because I had similar problems, and wanted to keep an eye on it.

Well, I believe I have found the solution, that worked for me at least... thought I'd share with you:

disable the Aero graphical interface

Here's a link on how to do it: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windo...windows-vista/

Yeah, it was that simple. Seems that the interface uses some graphics card resources, and that makes a conflict with the games running. So far I've been crash-free for 4 days, while usually it would crash 2, 3 times a day, no matter what I did.

I really hope this helps someone as I know how annoying this crash can be
