Safe temperatures?

Thread Starter
I've got my Antec P180 case wide open right now and I'm running dual 7800 GTX's in SLI. I just installed SLI for the first time. When go to view the core temperature I see that under load it rises to as high as 96 degrees. Is this safe and or normal? Also it only tells me 1 temperature, but it is possible that the cards are at different temps. How can I get the temp of each card's core? Would it not be safe to put the lid on my case and see how much higher teh temps rise? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

In my opinion, put the lid back on. What you want is a proper airflow.

I believe gpu can go as high as 100c and not be hurt. What kind of case cooling do you have though? I would try to put a 80mm or 92mm fan pointing at the gpu's it helps mine a lot. If you look in the bottom right you can see a fan on the bottom, thats where I would place one in your circumstance.

96C is hotter than I would go, although cards can usually handle up to 100C.

I had 2x 7800GTX in SLI and had the same problems my cards were 103C.

If I were you I would manually set the fan speeds for the cards to 100% should drop the temps a good 10C.

ATItool can do it with some cards

RivaTuner can also, but its a complicated program.

your case has a mount for a front intake fan directly in front of the video cards. i know the case doesn't come with them. i have a friend that saw nice g-card temp drops after installing one there though.

i used to use ATiTools to control my fan speed before i got my Zalman. it worked, but it was a major pain in the butt.

Rivatuner is better for fan speeds.

When you case is open (if the airflow is good) that will cause a rise in temps. However 100c is the highest for your cards

Alright so I put on my case and now my cpu runs 10 C hotter but I can't get my GPU to exceed 90 C on the nvidia control panel monitor. Would you guys think that if my CPU idles at ~40 C and loads at ~46 C and if my GPU idles at ~70 C and loads at ~90 C that I'd be okay? Also, how can I get the temp of EACH of my two GPU's?

I'm gonna try Rivatuner right now to speed up the GPU fans.

Thanks!

Dude, I get uncomfortable if my 7950 gets over 60C. I'ts even got passive cooling, is voltmodded and OC'ed like sin but it won't peak 62C.

Put as many exhaust and intake fans (balanced) as you can.

Check for dust. Dust is a horrible thing, and graphics card coolers particularly hate it. While you're down there, make sure GPU fans are working.

It's summer! I remember my last computer (A64 3200+, GF6500). I used to open up the side and direct a medium sized house fan at all the components! LOL. You do what you gotta do!
