Is New Chip AMD's Last Stand? - Page 3

I've given up on reading all of the "Omgz AMDz doomedd!!" It really gets nowhere, and anything we say doesn't mean dick until we actually have proof. So, I'm gonna sit and wait for it to come out before I make any judgment, for either side.

Edit: And when I say out, I mean available to buy. As in, no magazines or anything getting samples and so on. I mean some random guy can go out and buy one.
'bout time.

Much (but definitely not most) of the Omgz comes from the state of the company rather than the state of their products. Financially AMD is in a very bad spot ATM. The ATi acquisition stretched their accounts a bit thin, and the price war that Intel has waged since the release of conroe has not helped matters. AMD and Intel are about equal in price/performance on the consumer side - the manufacturing side is an entirely different matter. The price cuts that Intel has made are partly to put pressure on AMD, but much of it is also due to the fact that the difference in manufacturing costs between P4 and C2D is much smaller than the performance difference. Product-wise it looks like a coin toss as to whether AMD will end up in good shape or not. Financially AMD is hurting - and if the rumors of upcoming tech problems are true AMD, being a relatively small company, may not survive

What I have said for a while. No need to repeat it.

agreed

I also wish amd fanboys would stop saying "ZOMG GUYZZZ WERE GONNA RAPE C2D!" as if they were AMD themselves and cared only for the company, rather than themselves

Well if it does end up performing better then C2D (which it should since c2d is what a year old now or close) I sure hope its not cold bugged

(Sorry, first post. I hope i do alright)

I've never been an AMD fan for one simple reason. All this K10/Core talk would be obsolete if AMD hadn't come out with K8. Intel was holding back on massive development on the IA-32 because they were poised to replace it with IA-64 (Itanium). Unfortunately for Intel, and ultimately us, AMD came out with amd64 which is a complete mess. IA-64 is a much much cleaner implementation that is over 6x faster. I have read several threads (long time lurker) with people talking about "ops/clock". IA-64 does 6 entire threads per core, per cycle. That's without HyperThreading as well, more cores and more threads could come of it as EPIC is much more open-ended.

Sorry about the anti-AMD rant, I'm done.

-mactard

Edit: here's some higher-level reading for people who are interested in IA-64, it's very very cool.

Excellent read mactard, thank you, and welcome to OCN Forums.

I agree that 32-bit has been dragged out far beyond its lifetime, and this should see its end pretty soon. As code makes its way (finally) to the 64-bit level, computing will start to see a great change. Just touching on a few points in the article: For example, Predication totally blows Branch Prediction far out of the water. It makes me wonder why Branch Prediction was even allowed to make its way into processor spec.

Massive parallelism is the way to go. Everyone around here may be screaming for "bigger beefier" cores, but that doesn't solve anything. The CPU still only executes one thread at a time, which is easier on coding but inversely worse on performance. Eventually, it can become so bloated that having a single core will be 100x slower than just doubling the thread throughput per clock. Why even bother with single threaded CPUs anymore? The performance is horrible and dollars are being wasted on an architecture that should have seen its end many years ago.

seriously.

But guys.

Just imagine..

what if Phenom chips overclock like MAD!
If Phenom overclocks like man, why would AMD delay its launch at a lower clock speed?

exactly, and also AMD no longer is faster than Intel clock for clock so how would AMD's running at an incredible 2.5 ghz or so matter?

http://www.overclockers.com/tips01174/

fun reading. Also all AMD performance chips run on a 90nm process and have a TDP of ~125 watts, what are Intel's running at? 65nm process and a TDP of ~105 watts
