AMD/ATI, waiting for the right moment to pounce?

It seems that PCMagazine has gotten their hands on a "special" version of the Radeon HD 2900XT in a Crossfire setup which nearly DOUBLES performance across some games and benchmarks over NVIDIA's 8800 GTX SLI.

The systems they used were direct from Falcon Northwest and so the question is... what about the rest of us? The folks over at Dailytech provide their insight into this interesting find in an editorial.

I guess the xtra and faster memory makes the difference. Newegg has the 1gig GDDR4 versions for sale already. I think the gpu clock is the same but obviously the ram is faster. I also think the whole 2900XT lineup is performing better now that the driver's are starting to mature.

Well, 1024MB cards are useless to me. I don't run at that insane resolution. 1680x1050 for me.

Are they waiting for some actual DX10 games? They know that most people who wanted to get ahold of DX10 went for Nvidia so maybe they're waiting to 'blow us away' when the general population wants to upgrade again when Cyrsis and the otheres bring our cards to their knees. Otherwise if they release it now it might not bring much attention to it but if they release it with, let say Cyrsis, and it blows it out of the water, it'll bring a lot of publicity to it and also bring in the right time to upgrade since now the games are more demanding. My theory on it.
