Homemade NAS

Thread Starter
Hey, I am looking to build a NAS for me and my buddies to store stuff on. I am looking for the cheapest AMD motherboard with 8 SATA ports on it you guys can find. I am having a heck of a time finding ANY motherboard with 8 SATA plugs on it, let alone a cheap one. If cheap isnt possible, then the lowest price you can find would be appreciated.

EDIT: Arrg, well I am an idiot. I just found about 10, should have looked harder I guess. But not to make this a worthless post - what would you suggest as a good OS for the NAS? Should I go with Linux? Windows? Also, where would you recommend buying harddrives?

Why do you feel the need to have that many SATA ports? Four 500GB HDs will get you 2TB of storage and it'll cost $360. 2TB is a LOT of storage. If you want more storage, you can always look into 750GB or even the 1TB drives, so you don't have to go crazy looking for boards specifically with that many SATA ports.
