ATI X1950 Pro...Quick question

Thread Starter
hey all,

I am going to be looking for a small upgrade for my current CPU's graphics card, I don't want one of the fancy cards just yet, I'm waiting a year or so until there's far superior cards on the market, but in the meantime I would love an OK graphics card to run for a year or so.

All I really do is play WOW and Battlefield 2, nothing too intensive on graphics yet, or power requiremetns (as far as this nub knows =D)

I wanted Nvidia but all their cards require an extra PCI slot adjacent to the PCIX-16 slot, but I only have one in my current CPU, and after looking around the X1950 Pro only requires one slot.

The card is also now on sale for 200 CAD at a local store.

My question is:

I read the requirements for this card and it says that under a full load this card requires a 450Watt power supply to run correctly, but I only have a 300 watt power supply...Will this card run still? I've looked around on the internet and found a few places where people claim to have this card run just fine with 300 watt Power supplies but I wanted to be sure before I made the purchase. Anyone know ?

I would shoot for a 450 at least and possibly a 1950XTX instead, a lot of them are actually cheaper than the Pros and they are faster.

I would gladly do this, but the reason that I am limited at least for another year is that I currently don't hav ethe funds to spend to upgrade a PS and a graphics card ( Have some other things I have to buy, had to figure my budget to only allow this card)

Yeah. They x1950pro is a great card and for the price it cant be beat. But as far as your psu goes, unless it has some nice high amps on the 12v rail it probly wont cut it.

Yeah right X1950XTX's as cheap as X1950Pros

Sapphire X1950Pro's are available for 120$
Sapphire X1950XT's are available for 180$
Sapphire X1950XTX's are available for 250$

In price/performance the X1950Pro is unbeatable so since you have to buy a new PSU aswell the X1950Pro is the best pick for the money. I also have limited money to spend on my machine, the x1950pro is really good.

He says that the card is on sale at a store....most electronics stores wouldn't carry any x1950xt/ x1950xtx's, i know that Futureshop (canadian version of best buy) only has x1950 pro's in the x1950 series. I say go to an online vendor if you can, or even ebay. 200 is reasonable for an electronics store, not a computer parts store.

To answer your actual question, i think 300 is cutting it a little close, i'd definately upgrade. a 500w psu isin't too pricey, 50 bucks? (exactly what i did, bought a x1950 and a 500w psu)

your power supply most definitely will not handle that g-card. if you manage to boot at all, you'll be plauged by random BSODs.
