What do you want to do with your system? CPU isn't that important if you plan on gaming, you shouldnt have to spend $200 on it. I'd say if you have ~$600 for gfx, ram, cpu, and mobo, get an 8800GTS and use the rest of the money on all of the other parts.

So:

Video Card: EVGA 8800GTS 320MB - $279
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130082

RAM: Same stuff - $89
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820141064

CPU: 3600+ Brisbane - $63
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103046

Mobo: Biostar Tforce 550 - $80
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813138026

Total: $511

What brand PSU do you have? If it's one of those el cheapo nonames it won't be enough to power an 8800GTS. I left ~$60 just in case you need a PSU.

Why an Intel? The 3600 Brisbane costs about 1/3 of an E6600, and with a little overclocking it will perform equally or better while gaming. The Brisbane is a dual-core, so you can multitask with it.

when overclocked, the 6320 will kick the OC'd brisbanes behind.
still more expensive though.

No, not at stock. But the 3600 is a good overclocker, and with some overclocking there will be a negligible difference in games. The video card does all the work, anyways, and the 8800GTS > 8600GTS. Sure, you won't get 10 seconds in SuperPi, but you'll save a load of cash.
